Mapsource vs. Basecamp

Greetings. I'm new to the world of GPS, but I think I'm doing alright and figuring it out. I've been using Garmin's Basecamp, and it seems okay- but I have no frame of reference. Does anyone here have experience with both Mapsource, and Basecamp?

I find Mapsource easier to use. Maybe just a matter of preference, or that I started with Mapsource.

I think of Mapsource as used for road mapping & planning; whereas Base Camp more for TOPO maps and offroad use planning.

You should be able to install it from your mapping CD or download it for free.

Both products will handle all your maps, waypoints, routes, etc.

Is your netboook the SSD version? My SSD (drive C) is only 8 GB but I was able to install Mapsource on drive D which is 16Gb (upped from 8 GB).

I'm sorry, but I don't find this information helpful. What else you got?

MapSource 6.16.X, 16,747 KB
MapSource 6.13.7 10,116 KB

And the kicker is the maps.

CNNT 2011.4 1.71 Gigs
CN 2008 1.27 Gigs
US R&R 484 Megs

My numbers "may" be off a bit because I've reverse converted the current mapsets to work with 6.13.7. HTH

I've got Mapsource on my pc laptop and Basecamp on my Imac. They both seem to work pretty well. Only trouble I've had is that even after unlocking the CN maps, I'm still missing lots of smaller surface roads on Basecamp.

I think he meant that his thread got jacked. rn65 was the original poster and he asked about Mapsource vs Basecamp - bete jumped in and asked about how much memory it takes up.

You're right, my bad. I'd list the main differences between MapSource, which is my main planning tool, and BaseCamp which I use a bit, but it might not do any good as the BaseCamp for Mac that I use, and the BaseCamp for Windows version have some big differences. If it's the Mac version the OP is asking about, I'll respond.

The biggest advantage of Basecamp is that with the right gps plugged into your gps port, you can see the maps installed on the gps without them needing to be installed on the computer.

I am able to use Basecamp this way with my 295W, Oregon 550 and 62S.

Thanks for being tolerant of the ball-breaking; you're some good sports. It sounds to me that there isn't a big enough difference to worry about right now- I'll stick with the Basecamp that I already have, and maybe I'll familiarize myself with Mapsource once I get everything else figured out. I didn't want to waste my time on the wrong program since I'm still learning it all. It would suck real bad to get it all figured out, only to find out I'm using a second-rate program! Rotella.
