A Chain drive 900 would be a far move versatile bike than the big pig shafty that they put out last year. Make the ABS switch able and optional and it might even sell.

I agree that it would be more versatile with a chain... in the dual sport direction that is - but I'm looking for a shaft-driven middle-weight adventure bike that I can ride long distances in all kinds of weather and on all kinds of roads.

Besides... you've already got the 658/800GS and Tiger 800/ 800XC to choose from - and to a lesser extent the new DL650.

As far as piggishness goes... assuming you mean weight - I'd gladly sacrifice some off-roadability for a few more pounds to keep it planted through the inevitable crosswinds that plague those long stretches of open highway.

Maybe a revamped TDM with the S10's final drive is the way to go... if they could throw in a bit of wind proctection then all the better - and I like the earlier suggestion of keeping the electronics simple to help keep the initial $ outlay and on-going maintenance costs down.

I have a chain one (KTM) and shaftie one (S10) and could live with either. The 990smt is just about the perfect bike for me size wise. The only thing I would modify is a larger gas tank otherwise the combo of character, comfort, handling etc is . The S10 the other hand really surprises me for it's size in that it is very easy to ride. Both bikes I can do 6-700 mile days on the grin factor is just a bit more on the KTM.

You would not want it! may as well get a DR650 as it is probably a better bike IMHO.

Why? I have my 2nd XT660Z now and still love it As long as you remember it's an all road bike, not off road.
I know there were some reliability issues initially, but these are easy to fix, cush drive for example. The DR has it's weak points too
