Trans Iowa Trail
Hey,
Great route, just wondering though. What version of CNNA were you using when you laid this out? Thanks

CNNA? Not sure what that is Charlie, I used a combination of Google Earth and county maps downloaded off the Iowa DOT web site. Did the route conversions from kmz files to gpx. Worked really well, everything was spot on.

If you decide to ride this route when in Pella stop in at Cammies just down the side street from the wind mill. Have an Ice Cream and talk with Cammie. Her husband rides a KLR 650 wish we could have met him.

Garmin "City Navigator North America".
What GPS did you use for this trip?

I just wondered because the routes came out looking like "direct routes" in City Navigator North America. I just traced over them and built my own routes and removed the BBF's (big blue flags) so I could use them in my 276c. I have them now, nice work!.
We're going to be in Iowa (Jefferson) in late September or Early October and may try to ride it before the snow flies and the wind picks up to a steady 50mph. Sure is bunch of B roads in those routes. Those suckers will bite ya bad in the mud. Back in 1987, I was moving a 1981 John Deere 8430 4 wheel drive tractor with duals in that stuff (on a B road) moving it from one field to another. I got it buried it up to the hubs before I knew what was going on, couldn't wiggle it out either. It took two more to pull mine out. Liked to pulled them all apart too. I was helping a friend out and he wasn't too happy with me after that.

Not to jack the thread (kimzx1000r, let me know if you object and I will delete and repost in a new thread), but here's a gravel and "B" road track file for the Loess Hills area (extreme western Iowa) between Misssouri Valley, IA and Castana, IA. This file is fairly cleaned up.

Here's another one for the southern Loess Hills. The one track ("888South") is cleaned up, the other is my raw active log and a bunch of waypoints from an exploring trip I did last fall down into NW Missouri.
My hope is to one day get a gravel/B route from about St Joe Missouri up to Sioux City

Charlie I used a garmin nuvi 500 its a great unit for the bike. Waterproof with touch screen and glove friendly. I believe it to be the best unit for the bike other then the 1000 dollar version. All the roads showed up on it even the B-roads. I have the full CN NORTH AMERICA NT2011.31 AND TOPO MAPS. Came with the unit. I can scroll map while riding by touching screen. Food, gas and all the goodies for finding what you need along the way.
Google Earth allows you to make really good routes that are easy to follow. If it were not for the garmin limits on points allowed you could trace the roads perfectly. I buried my klr over the swing-arm on one of the roads I can not imagine what would happen with heavy equipment. :) Best to ride those when it is dryer. I packed the rear end so bad the motor would not turn the rear wheel. That stuff was like big gobs of bubble gum! I hope you get to try the route it is a nice ride and the country side is very pleasing to the eye. |

kimzx1000r, looks like you put together a nice ride!
Do the tracks you posted include the dirt roads you were unable to ride, do to the mud? How many miles do you expect this to be (including all the dirt roads)? thanks for all the work putting this together and for sharing it!! I hope to ride it this summer! Brad
