2015 yooper madness 1000

Jim has also posted up his other IBA ride for August .
Here is the direct link.
http://members.triton.net/vandenbe/2015YM.htm

Yooper Madness II SS1K
Saturday, August 22, 2015
An IBA Pre-Approved Ride. We do the paperwork, and you concentrate on the ride.

All makes of bikes and passengers are welcome.
This is a great ride for Riders looking to earn their IBA number !!
This is not a mandatory big group ride. Ride in your own small group or do your own thing individually, or ride with the balance of the riders.

This Ride is approximately 1,018 Miles

It's time to head "Up North" again , and I don't mean just to the northern part of the Lower Peninsula !
I'm sure this ride will be even better than the first Yooper Madness that I organized a few years back. This will be an enjoyable ride up to and around the U.P. , both for Riders that already have their IBA number and Riders needing to earn their IBA number , with a mix of both two-lane and freeway.

Of course, you will be riding over the Big Mac Bridge, twice. Once during the daylight hours and also at night.
And you will be riding county road H-58 ( Michigan's 45 mile Mini-Dragon Tail ) from Grand Marais to Munising through the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This wasn't completely paved during the first Yooper Madness SS1K. This stretch beats the "Tunnel of Trees" in the lower hands down, IMHO.
The run from Rudyard to Trout Lake on H-40 is also a great road for motorcycles - good pavement and plenty of curves.
We will be riding through Marquette, the U.P.'s largest city, home to NMU and the Yooper Dome, and MGH ; a teaching hospital.
Then our route will take us west to Gogebic Lake at Bergland in the Ottawa National Forest for a "corner" receipt and then head south to US-2 before heading back to St. Ignace and the Big Mac Bridge to cross back down to the Lower.
The stretch on M-69 from just south of Sagola to west of Escanaba is also a nice run that will bypass a portion of US-2.

Start at the Beacon & Bridge station right off US-127 on M-55 in Houghton Lake, Michigan at 6:00 am.
End at the Wheel Inn Restaurant ( 24/7 ) on the south side of St. Johns on Business US-127 ( Old S. US-27 , just north of Lansing ) next to the Shell station.

Meet & Greet at the Beacon & Bridge station between
5:15 am and 5:45 am, and form small groups if desired and depart at 6:00 am.
If not pre-registered, submit signed Application & Release Form the morning of the ride and pay registration fee ( cash, check or money order, see below ) before the ride.
Download form here . Please have form completed and signed before arriving in Houghton Lake.
Have your odometer reading recorded before departure.

Note : A full refund will be given if you cancel ( if pre-registered ) or do not successfully complete the ride.

Seven Mandatory Receipts are required.
Note : Big Mac Bridge toll is $4.00 for MC's

These are the Seven Receipts you need to turn in at the end of the ride :
NOTE : These receipts are required to confirm you did at least 1,000 miles on this ride.

Rudyard and The Soo - Both, in either order, your choice.
Grand Marais ( doesn't need to be a gas receipt - any type of receipt with a legible date & time )
Marquette - The BP Station across the street from the Yooper Dome. North 3rd St. & East Fair Ave. Take Front St. to north of Downtown and turn left on East Fair Ave.
Bergland / Gogebic Lake
Escanaba
Ending receipt at St. Johns
NOTE : All Mandatory receipts MUST have a legible and accurate date & time and location.

The ride ends at the Wheel Inn ( 24/7 ) on the south side of St. Johns next to the Shell gas station. Have your odometer reading recorded, and hand in your Six Mandatory gas receipts , between 2:00 am ( or after I return ) and 6:00 am .

NOTE : All Mandatory gas receipts MUST have a legible and accurate date, time, and location.

Friendly Suggestions :
A good place to meet-up and grab a coffee in the UP on the way back to the Big Mac Bridge is at the Holiday Stationstore ( 24/7 ) on the east side of Escanaba on US-2.

Similarly, another good location in the Lower Peninsula to grab a coffee, re-group and rub elbows with other Riders is Charlie's ( 24/7 ) just south of Grayling, on the west side of I-75 ( the 4 Mile exit, I-75 exit 251 ). After a break at Charlie's, it will be an easy 120 mile ride to end in St. Johns. An extra break late in the ride is usually a great idea.

Cost for a full package is $45 ( Full Package that includes an IBA certificate, SS1K license plate backer, and Michigan SS1K pin ), otherwise $40 ( Certificate and Pin only ).
$8 additional for a passenger - includes extra passenger certificate & pin.
Your application for certification by the IBA will be submitted as a group and will be expedited by the IBA . No logs or copies of receipts, and other forms to be submitted to the IBA by you. We do the paperwork, you do the ride.

Contact Jim VanDenBerghe by phone ( 231-224-6970 ) or email ( preferred ) if you have any questions, etc.

You may Pre-Register : Application & Release Form

So this is a non- stop run? How long is it anticipated to take?

Its nice to see some interest !!! Years ago these local Michigan sanctioned IBA rides were staged out of Capital Harley Davidson in Lansing. In 2007 and 2009 we would get 40 or 50 riders, last year we only had about 11 on the Lake Superior 1000 and maybe 18 on the Lower Great Lakes 1000.Hopefully the rider numbers will climb again.
I imagine you will be riding your GSA.
Two of my riding partners who will likely be there also ride 1200 GSA's.
Gas Guzzler just turned 110,000 miles on his !!!

In! In! In!

I've done 1000-1500 miles in a day many times each year since 2003. I've never documented it officially, but I think that it's time!

Funny thing though, I was just surfing the web earlier for Iron Butt sanctioned stuff & stumbled across MSTA... & now I see this! Coincidental?!

I may do this 2-up with the wifey!

Do we have to wait until August? I'll do it this weekend!

You have to wait, it will give you something to look forward to. But June is the Lake Huron 1000.That will hold you over till August.
Two up would be cool if she is up to it.You would likely get consecutive IBA numbers with the wife also, that would be neat.Just make sure to fill out the paperwork with all of her info also, so she gets her number and certificate.I would think it a impressive accomplishment for a passenger, at least we get to control the bike.
Incidentally, this August during the Lower Great Lakes 1000, a friend of mine rode his Harley Electra Glide two up with his girlfriend to an enjoyable finish. They did it old school too, leather jackets and jeans, half helmets, stock bike and lights and no heated gear. She was a bit chilly by the end, but still smiling.

Don't forget about the Lake Huron 1000 in June.
