I am considering a trip up to the Gunflint trail later this week. I would be camping and was wondering about Bugs and other wildlife issues (bear's and camp food, etc...).

Any advice or local know how would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

there are bugs, DEET bug dope should keep them off you. Don't put food in your tent, bears might come in. I put food at the far end of my campsite in a metal box with some noise makers on it (plate and utensils). When the bear gets to the food box the noise wakes me up so I can get out of the tent with a fry pan and spoon to scare the bear away. If the bear doesn't scare away I ride back to town for more food.
A metal food box will keep mice from your food too.
Some guys hang food from a tree but the bears know about this trick and just rip the rope down and take your food anyway. More people are seriously injured in the Boundary Waters buy trying to hang food than any other form of stupidity. (statistic from about 10 years ago, involved death even)
have fun, it's supposed to cool down this week too

"fry pan and spoon to scare the bear away"
despite what you may be thinking I do not try to feed the bear some of my cooking. I bang the spoon on the pan to make noise, just sayin'

The bear is thinking, "MMM, eggs and bacon."
Meanwhile, Tom comes out saying, "Alright Bear, let me fry that up first, then see what you think."
At the thought, the bear doesn't feel so hungry anymore.

...And suddenly, I'm craving eggs and bacon myself.

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and live in Duluth, so I thought I'd check in. Also thought I'd see if anyone has an opinion to share about my dream of doing an all-dirt circle-tour. Well, maybe 95% dirt. Anyone know what the Canadian side would be like? Anyone interested? Am I delusional?

Posting at 2am you may be delusional! J/k. I think everyone here would be interested in such a trip. Try asking the Northern riders forum in canada about their side. i don't think we would find a 95 percent dirt route but regardless it would be fun to plan such a ride.- Welcome aboard!

There was a Lutz siting on Hwy 2 going towards Two Harbors about 4:45. I was in the dark grey chev pickup.

Oh, it was you...in that case, that middle finger was just my way of saying hello! Actually, I guess I missed ya. I was on my way home from work. Maybe I'll be more observative next time.

As luck would have it, Lake County was applying dust suppressant to Cramer Road today. They'll probably hit many of the well-travelled gravel roads in the area now. Just a bit too late for the Shindig riders.

You'd be hard pressed to link up dirt on the Canadian Side. Most of the dirt roads run North to South and you'd need East to West...you'd be doing a lot of black top. But I'm not saying don't try
