I have no "normal mileage" on a chain. This is my second chain bike ever, and I'm a rookie with chains. This one was on the bike when I bought it used last February, and I put 6,000 miles on it. I used "chain wax" to lube this one, and I'm changing my strategy to an oiler with this new chain/sprockets. It probably has some more miles left on it, but I want a new chain prior to my trip in March.

Every one of my power slides is by mistake, and I prefer to avoid them. I've lost traction plenty enough on dirt and mud while trying to maintain traction. I see no reason to intentionally break loose a tire's blessed hold to mother earth. Falling can hurt, especially on a canyon road, and I'm allergic to pain.

Happy 2012 fellow AdvRiders of the Northern Riviera! I celebrated hard and stayed up until midnight, Nova Scotia time.

Ya, JW "stubbed his toe" while doing manual construction support work. He dropped a 5 gallon bucket of salt/sand on his toe. Remember the hill on his driveway? After that, I made him help lift a patio door plus a long window up the stairs to the second floor of his casa.

And if you're really determined:

These are Copper Canyon pictures from last January at this exact time.

And here's the adventure motorcycle (the front bike, not the back one), and the foolish but determined rider:

More chain talk

I did a little digging around with Google and there is some pretty good information out there relating to motorcycle chains. From what I gathered keeping your chain properly adjusted and clean are important, which shouldn’t really surprise any of us. It will be interesting to see how changing from the wax to oil will turn out in terms of longevity. My thoughts (taken with a grain of salt) are on one hand the wax may act as a barrier keeping dirt and moisture from getting past the o-rings. Another thought I had is that its possible oil will help extend the life of a slightly worn chain where the o-rings are getting weathered and no longer keep the factory lubricant in place. Then again, by that time it’s probably a good idea to throw a new one on and avoid the breakdown. Either way, improper adjustment where the chain is too tight will overheat the chain and any lube you have will thin and fly off. I’d better check mine. I may not have wanted to take that small amount of slack out. It does still have some slack in it, but I'm not sure how much it has as the suspension compresses.

New Year Motorcycle Resolutions

Happy new year all, whats your resolutions pertaining to bikes this year.
Mine are;
1) make it to the shindig this spring (missed last year due to broken clutch cable)
2) Ride to Rossport, Ont.
3) at least 3 weekend camping trips

I know, pretty lame but mostly I was only able to ride back and forth to work last year.

Hi Guys,
Hope everyone had a nice New Years. I posted a poll on the Shindig thread here. I'm hoping folks will take the poll so we can see what dates work the best for the majority of riders. Peace out!

I did indeed. Hopefully you took it as a friendly honk and not trying to scare you off the bike. Nice morning for a ride!

I must report about the Int. Motorcycle Show. The one in Dallas was pretty lame from what others said who went. Not as many major motorcycle companies present. Not as many vendors either. So you might think twice about going. Just my 2 cents worth.

Happy New Year to all. Making Grand Marais reservations this week. See you this summer hopefully. Beer will be COLD...

I did the same, and consulted with JW plus a long time iron butt riding buddy. Although there are many approaches, the keep it oiled is one of them. "What about the dirt?", was my question to my IB Buddy. The oil will sling it off, and you can brush it clean now and then.

AND then:

I like #3 a lot, especially if you concede to include any of us, and you let one of the nuts in this group influence the destination. I can see riding the farthest north dirt road in Ontario, or something really nuts like trying to cross over the north side of Lake Nipigon, or camping on Gunflint Lake on the Canadian side, or..... (ideas anyone?) Rossport is nice too, and I still have the Delta Diner on my "ride to eat" list. Delta Diner could be a road bike trip, or dual sport with some sand roads thrown in at the bird sanctuary near Gordon.

Ha, now we know who it was - I think you may have been confused for me a few times. I just looked at your profile...I assume you were riding your EC-250 to be confused with my bike (red plastics). You have it plated? How is it/how do you use it? I've had this idea in the back of my mind that I want another two stroke...but this time as a dual sport.
