Here you go. You can buy one today at your local Suzuki dealership:
![]() I too have a K75. But unlike you, I love the looks of the current generation of naked standards - Bandits, Bonnevilles, Street Triple, I'd take any of them. Ironically, I really never cared for the looks of the old CBs. ![]() But if it's (relatively) naked and has a fairly upright riding position it's a standard in my book. But the folks that like standards are probably outnumbered 100:1 by the cruiser and crotch rocket fans. Edit: How about this for a modern standard?

The DR650 is actually pretty close to the UJM, I think.
RoyQ's bike : DR650 thread neutral and comfortable seating position: check normal handlebars:check without tons of plastic: check visible engine: check powerful engine: well, it's pretty low powered for bikes today, but it would have been pretty average in the early seventies: 35 hp, same as the Honda 350 I think. ........shu shu screwed with this post 04-27-2011 at 05:47 PM |

but as you pointed out, I think the power (and delivery) would be woefully outmatched vs. most modern day standards probably hangs fine with the modern retro bikes though |

It hangs fine with just about anything to about 85mph. Out-shines a large standard for urban riding.

When I think standard, I think old English bikes, older sportsters, the UJM bikes, the w650, new Bonneville, the TU250.
A standard should be a bike that two people can jump on and go for a comfortable ride, with a real rear seat and pegs a normal size passenger can use for a few hours at least. That style is still popular in other places, like Japan. They get the cb400ss and other cool standards. I have only ridden standards on the street since I started street riding 36 years ago. Old Triumphs mostly, new Triumphs, Sportsters, tu250. Old dual sports were standard bikes with a little more suspension... I have dual sported standard street bikes, and rode standards all around the US, and never found I needed wind protection or a lot of plastic all over my bikes. |

Did you miss the word "large" ??? An EX650 is not what I would consider a large Standard. Even with that I find a thumper much better for urban assault.

IMO large is 1000cc and up. Middle is in the 800cc range and 650's are on the lower mid-range.

If you want to make a trip out of it let me know. I am at Latus in Gladstone (Portland) Oregon. I could set up your new XR with higher gearing (that is what I am going to do to mine) like my friend did to his.
