R80 G/S rear brake options?

I decided to get some new spokes for my '84 & once the wheel guy had my rims apart, he told me my hub is at the lower end of lining remaining (need new hub). BMW no longer carries the part & I'm wondering what my options are.

I'm looking for a used one at the moment.

I've seen these bikes with the same part no. (36311241671):
R80GS 06/80 - 03/87 USA
R80ST 10/80 - 10/84 USA
R65GS

Any info appreciated...I'd love to get rolling again.

You can't buy the hub, but you CAN buy the whole wheel. You were gonna get new spokes anyway, right? Yikes.

The hub was around 650 & the stainless spokes I was going to get were about $150...then labor....= same as new price.
Thanks for the tip though....

FYI...some of the BMW sites show the rear hub & price....but no cigar. Maybe they just show the whole wheel & a price....but "no longer available" may apply. Do you know for sure the wheel is available?

I'm still hoping to find other options...like metal deposition spray & turn the hub/cut.....or something?

It took 27 years for it to wear to this point. If you are just above min. spec. You probably have at least half of that time again to get below spec. I would reuse it. Save your money for gas & beer.

I was going to say the same thing. Most all of them are at or below spec since those BMW shoes are harder than the drum. Mine are probably below spec but they still work. There is hardly an airhead out there that you don't have to back the brake way off in order to get the wheel off because the shoes are in a glaciated drum. At some point there are going to be a lot of airheads needing new brake drum liners!

I've got some feelers out to some UK specialty places that do re-lining & I'll post back if I hear anything positive.

Here's pic of the hub....just in case you can put it to use?

Vintage car guys reline their drums. Look into Porsche 356 A and B models.

I think the relining drum might be a problem....because it looks like the wear surface is down below the spoke seats....meaning, it looks like the only way to drop in a new lining would be to machine away the spoke seats...see pic

Wheel is "no longer available" as well as the hub, per dealers.....none in the US....none in Germany.

The dealer said the only way BMW would produce more is if there's demand for them. This apparently means placing an order & waiting to see if it ever gets filled.

Dealer said it might be months & they weren't advocating laying out $600 - $900 out for hub or wheel assembly....on a "maybe".

Oh well...keep my eyes peeled for a good used one.....like the rest of us. At least the front brakes are available!

All the brake rebuilders I contacted (most of them in the UK) said they can't sleeve this rear hub...have tried & failed.

Anyone who's smart enough to do it is also smart enough to say no.

The hurdles they throw up are bonding and liability.

One line of thought was to machine out the existing lining and drop a two piece unit in.

Far as I know the attempt on someone else's hub failed.

I've tried relining shoes with thicker material but the can shoes distort meaning the diameter of the shoes and lining is different leading to reduced contact area.

I expect that if the shop doing the bonding had a last that would support the shoe during the bonding process all would be good but I haven't found anyone willing to do make the tools for such a small run item.
Perhaps it would be more economicly viable in a market the size of continental U.S.A, UK or Europe.

If you find someone to do either job let us all know know I have a couple of worn hubs and a unit that is wearing OK but wont go forever.

I think it says on the hub...7.92 in. if I remember correctly
