East Fort Rock OHV Trail System or..

China Hat, Oregon. Turnsleft wanted a few days of trail
riding and I needed to learn how. We headed down to Oregon
last week and spent four days riding these great trails.



We got a great camp site with no one else around. This is 22 miles east of
Bend Oregon, and 7 miles off the main road.



This sun rise greeted us. We needed to go back to Bend to pick up some
OHV stickers to be legal to ride these trails. we rolled through there to
late to get them the previous day.



The trails are in all kinds of condition from groomed to rocky to whoops!



there are good markers at the major intersections, and maps provided



turnsleft lead the way at his own pace and I followed at my inexperienced one





lot's of interesting scenes



a pine forest has lot's of these



there are several play area's



and chipmunks trying to avoid getting run over



other campers showed, Pig Pen and his buddy Dave among them



they told us stories over the fire



and we headed out the next day for more map reading





the burms were piled high and the Capt. showed me how to rest
on one



the pines were all sizes and shapes





Fort Rock was an apt name



another great trail lead up to and down from this big view





this manzaneta provided a garden like feel at this section



there were some areas of volcanic rock that made for an interesting ride







we met very few riders,



this Yamaha group engaged in conversation with turnsleft



as did this Honda bunch



back to navigation



Kelvy got to use the trusty Corona (folding saw)



still some old snow around



the 351 at work, he got plenty of rest waiting for me



some moisture made for this



and this needed some



trails were clearly marked



our last day proved to be cool







this tree was a hugger





after we got back to camp the sun broke out



then it snowed some more



all in all a great trip. I learned new skills and the Captain had lot's of fun







There are 318 miles of trail covering about 110,000 acres and ranging in elevation from 4,400 to 6,400 feet. We rode 174 miles of them.

I wish I coulda come with you guys. It looks pretty nice down there, despite the wintry "Spring" weather. Thanks for the report.

Do they still run the China Hat IDSE qualifer there? I can remember running through sun, rain then snow the last time I ran it. Nice place to ride.

Its not an ISDE Qualifier but yes there was a ISDE Race there on april 17th it was awesome!

Tom and I left the morning of the forth for Bend Or. Oldx and I went down to China Hat in Sept of 08 and I always wanted to go back. Kwisn and I tried to do this last fall but deer season nixed that run. Any way Tom and I were planing to leave around 08:00 but my trailer lights had other plans. I think I got going around 09:15. Tom and I were going to meet at the Indian John Rest Area. Seeing I was behind we met at Goldendale. Down through Biggs and on to Bend via 97. I knew from the last trip that you need a OHV sticker and seeing we were to late in the evening off we went to the Road 2510 Staging Area. The same place Oldx and I rode from. Spent the night and went back into town on Thursday.

Tom wheeled into town and took me on a tour of Bend and Central Oregon Comm College. We were BSn and missed our turn.

We left on 61 and worked our way towards the SW.



Toms first trail ride. Nice trail and a bit dusty for Tom.





Tom let me lead and I took pictures of him. Then we would look at a map and take off again. Kinda how it went, ride to a intersection and see where we are at.



Tom a little slow but steady. We didn't want to pick any one up off the ground. And I didn't want to pressure test my ankle.







This is the last picture I took on the 5th. We did around 25 miles and got stopped by snow on the east side of China Hat 50/60 trail.



We took a EZ tour on Friday. Down the 2510 road to wind up at the South Ice Cave.

This is the Rock Crawl Play Area. There words not mine. I wouldn't drive any thing through there cept maybe my Gas Gas TXT.

On the way back. Trail 90 I think. We took road 18 up to 57 and back to camp.







Saturday; Made a loop starting with 40~90~94~40~80.
The last part of 90 and most of 94 were pert rocky but doable all in all
a very fun ride.

One of 3 or 4 guys on TTR 250s









We would go from the nice stuff like above to rocky spots. About every time I would start to unwind the 351 a bit I would get into a s load of rocks.

This and the next pic was a deep rocky hole.





Nice trail then make a corner and be bouncing off sharp rocks. They had Easiest Trails, More Difficult Trails and Most Difficult Trails. They need to go to Walker Valley or Taneum.lol

These were some fun and nice trails even if the weather was a bit strange.

Tom musta got that hat in Abilene or somewhere. It can't be a Northwest hat, because the soaking rain will make the brim droop.

OK, seriously though, how much were the ORV tags for out-of-state bikes? Last I was down there, WA ORV tags were good in OR too, so I'd assumed a valid WA plate was OK for ORV use like it is here.

That chipmunk was Tasty! The stickers were $10, good for two years and they are Oregon, Washington's are valid, they just cost more.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind about the stickers.

Can't say I've eaten a chipmunk raw and whole like that , but squirrel haunches roasted over a campfire can be pretty tasty.
