...by the way, anyone have a line on one of these bikes? They seem to all pop up at once (usually around the time the dishwasher craps out or the auto insurance payment is due for the year) and then --POOF!-- disappear just as quickly!

They're out there, you just need to be patient. It took me a year to find exactly what I was looking for. If you're open to shipping, it opens up more opportunities.

Try Pelicans, Craigslist, Cycle Trader and Google! Keep an eye on Max BMW! I almost got one there, but just missed it. Luckily one popped up about four hours from me.

Good luck!

I missed one by a few hours in '09. Then I was out of riding for a couple years. I jumped back in when I found a low mile S set up the way I wanted. I did buy out of the area (San Jose BMW) and had it shipped to N Idaho. It's proving to be everything I hoped for and I am having a lot of fun. Got cool "new" stuff to install in the next couple of weeks.

As mentioned be patient and check all the usual sources. Wash your dishes by hand and pay monthly insurance installments.

Buffeting is a non-issue for me because my head is in clean air all the time. I'm am 6' 2" with a long torso and long arms and the wind hits my chest. I find the bike very comfortable on long days.

I spent nearly an hour sitting on your bike a few months ago! I went to SJ BMW to check it out (only about 10 minutes from my house) and was told there was a long distance buyer ahead of me. It was well set up with the bars and bags. You got a great one!
Next time I just need to be first...

You mean despite their assurances that all malarchists would be at bay you slipped by?!

Sounds like I jumped at the right time...

Here's my old one.

Just before I took this one, two F-18s at a full left bank shot through that canyon in front of and below me.

It's loud of course, sounds angry but it's just for trackdays really. No issue with fueling at all...I left the Cat in tact so there's still plenty of back pressure. If anything it pulls a little better from 4500rpm onward and revs up a little faster.

send me a pm with your email addy and I can send you a video of the exhaust on the bike running

considering either setting this up again for riding on the street again - or just selling to fund a new I-4 track bike....it's too nice for track days and I'm never gonna be fast enough to want to race it either. My baby's low mileage, 5800 last I checked, never down, all is perfect....still a feeler but if anyone's searching I'm thinking about it...

Just picked up an R1200S this week. 8200 miles when I bought it in San Fran on Tuesday. Took 3 leisurely days to ride it down Highway 1 back to San Diego.

This bike was given to Brian Parriott by BMW as a gift for his win in the 2006 8 Hours of Daytona on the #46 R1200S of SJ BMW/BMW Atlanta.

His wife wanted a more comfortable bike, so he traded it to SJBMW for an F800GS. The previous owner bought it from SJBMW, and has now sold it to me.

Quick shot from Wednesday morning as I left the Bay Area to start my trek down Highway 1:
