After much deliberation, I ordered the Montana 600 today from GPS City. I didn't order any maps, as I'm hoping to be able to find some free online maps. Worst case, I end up braking down later and ordering the Western US DVD. I'm still in shock that I spent that much on a GPS, but I'm VERY excited to get it in my hot little hand and start messing with it. Thank you all, in advance, for your patience with my inevitable stupid questions.

These links for free maps might get you started OK.

I love this site! Thanks for the links. I'm checking them out, and hope to have a slight clue by the time my Montana arrives. I'm stoked to have a proper GPS, finally!

I see a new version of MapInstall for Windows was released recently:

MapInstall software version 4.0.3

as of October 23, 2012
Download (22.24 MB)

View installation instructions
Notes:

Change History
Changes made from version 4.0.1 to 4.0.3:

Improved performance for map trimming and map building.
Improved performance when switching between pages.
Added functionality that allows using the middle mouse button to pan the map.
Fixed progress feedback at the end of trimming (MapInstall should not remain at 100% for a long time without actually being at 100%).
Fixed an issue when hovering over map tiles would make MapInstall crash in some cases.
Fixed an issue when trying to select more than 4GB worth of tiles.
Fixed an issue with the display of maps when there was a partial map images installed on the device.
Fixed handling of faulty map products.
Fixed an issue where clicking the Find Devices button several times would hang the app.

(No update to the MAC version, though)

I'm sure it's still alive; my MapInstall automatically downloaded the update and asked if I would like to install it. I did, and I am now at 4.0.3

Works for me. Just tested it again.

Also, when I looked at MapManager on the Mac I saw that I had 4 versions of City Navigator on my computer so I backed them all up then removed the previous three versions and now BaseCamp loads much faster for me.

Anyone else having issues?

I am at a different location now, and I still get some Marine Plotter uSD card page when I click on [Download] at the above link.

I couldn't get the download from Garmin's site to work either (PC running Firefox), but when I ran MapInstall it initiated the download itself and installed successfully.

If you are using Chrome you may have problems, try IE or Firefox.

May be because I am in US, and you are in Canada.

[Download] link no longer active or clickable for me, regardless of browser used.

One other thing you can try is turn off your AV program.

Garmin Download Problems

Guys,

Here in the UK I get the download problem all the time, Garmin notify me by e mail that a new version is available, I try to download it and get sent to some Garmin shop to buy an SD card!

I e mailed support and they say they are looking in to it.

Like the other guys I opened up 'mapinstall' and it offered the update any way.
