New TKC 80 will go on tomorrow! Comfortable that will help, and of course slowing it down a bit and reducing my risk of riding over my abilities :)

Really enjoying your updates! What tires did you have on the back and front?

Ride safe, and thanks for taking the time to provide such a great trip report.

Tires

My 1150 GS came with Metzeler Tourance front and rear. They served me very well in all conditions here in SW Colorado except rutted frozen snow... just quit trying to ride that! When I put 7K miles on a DR650 in South America in '08 it came equipped with Tourance... never had a problem... more than half the ride was on ripio... all but one of us fell... some more than once but it did not seem to be tire related... fatigue more a factor. The guys with knobbies had to change tires about half way. Those of us on Tourance still had plenty of tread left at the end of the trip. The Tourance had always been fine until I met my match on the Separ Road down in Southern NM. An experienced rider had told me that I might have a problem, he was right, 4 or 5 dumps, 3 hours and all of my water to go 32 miles, and I started out with plenty of water. I put the Heidenau K-60's on just as the weather was changing here. Harry at Basin Motorcycle Works in Mancos warned me that the new tires might be squirrely in the wet so I took it easy. I have been very happy with them on the dirt roads hereabouts...they don't do so well in ice ruts on snowy dirt roads either though I got a lot further than with the Tourance... not necessarily a good thing because it meant further to ride out over the same crap I rode in on. No substitute for being younger and in shape! Long story short: Tourance served me very well in all conditions in SA.

Glad you are ok, Mark. Just remember that you will be farther away from good hospitals pretty soon. Really enjoying the report!

The TKC 80's are a softer rubber and I think will grip better on pavement than the K60's have. Combined with slowing it down a bit.... Yes I think it will be better.

Riding a motorcycle aggressively certainly adds to the risk, reducing your margin of error. But of course there are times that I get into riding this way, and know that odds go up of having an issue. I am thankful that I have not been hurt badly, so I need to reduce my risk as I go forward..... All you riders know what I mean.

I'm out of the loop since the holidays, and what do I find upon returning...???

Same-ol' same-ol'. Nothing new, Mark just had another 'off'. Although, in a fit of inspiration, he decided the back washing out was not exciting enough, and threw a tank-slapper in to boot!

I have to share, you've been an inspiration to me for a long time. Not necessarily an inspiration to travel the world, but rather an inspiration to live life to the fullest; and to do it with a indomitable passion and integrity that begs others to match it.

That was before. Now, you're slowly become my inspiration to buy better ATGATT... Please be safe, Mark, but keep riding with passion!! Your ADV family loves you.

as you get further south and the road quality diminishes you will have no choice but to slow down, that way more photos and chillin' out, keep safe out there and keep it coming
