Mark, have any of you heard from Lars and Henrrietta. Their RR has gone dead for the last couple of weeks. Thought I'd ask as I saw you posted on their RR a while back. rj

March 2nd Canoa, Ecuador to Mindo

Canoa is a beach town. If your young and a surfer then I think you can stay for a long time. But we were ready to ride on, back into the mountains of Ecuador.

The beach is always great for a visit. In Canoa the fisherman keep there boats on the beach. They roll them out of the water on logs ....

They carry there fishing nets and gear in colorful wraps.

It is a much busier town on weekends...

Catching Sunset ..... Me and the Local checking it out.

Lots to do in Canoa

It started raining about 1 Am.... And woke up to more rain. It has been raining a great deal here the past month...
James looking out his window.

Not sure what to make of the Rain.

The main beach road was muddy and slippery

Lots of standing water

But we rode out of town and up the coast before turning toward the mountains. Had a great ride. About 240 Miles before arriving at the "cloud forest" town of Mindo.

Arrived here before the rain started.

A really great Hotel for $16.00 PP. Had a great dinner and checked up the web!

I hope you got to run into a local Colombian Expat rider living and working in Mindo named Camilo, he is top notch guy. Also some damn fine pizza in town here:

More than likely he will find you first if you are in Mindo long

He is starting up a new lodge outside of town a little ways and offered up a great place to stay at an even better price It was still in the making but worked fine for us but was no internet just yet.

Mindo is pretty damn cool in my book

Another awesome video, James! Thanks for posting. I'll be down there soon! Actually did a little riding around Medellín this week. Up to La Ceja, La Unión, and Sonsón. Very nice.

Great Video James!

We had tons of video from this days ride, was not easy to edit. We were also hiking about at 13,000+ to get certain angles. Enjoy!!

Great video James, what editing program did you use to blend the video from the 2 different cameras?

MINDO, Ecuador

Stayed in Mindo at a great place, owners Susan and Louis are wonderful. Really a great place to hang out.

While here decided to adventure the local way.

No other photos but a short video that a put together after the fun of being on 13 Ziplines across and around the valley near Mindo. It was a blast.

Then had a bit of time in town. Decided to to a local chocolate company tour.

OK our guide was not the most interesting as we started the tour. James was a bit bored.

Cocoa Pod.

But we learned about the varieties of the Cocoa Plants and how they are turned into Chocolate.

Fruit has Cocoa seeds. That are extracted, fermented, dried, roasted, separated, ground, pressed, Conched, and made into bars of chocolate.

Fermenting .....

Drying

With a group of mostly young college students who were great to talk to. They are in a study abroad program and living in Quito for the term.

We are at 1,400 Meters (or 4,500 feet) and surrounded by clouds. It was raining hard during our tour as well.

And a few flowers and plants to enjoy as well.

Separating the seed covers to get to the nibs.

Roasting. This reminded me of how we polished rocks as kids. Not real high tech..... But it does the job.

Explaining the Conking

Starting to look good.

at the end of the tour we got to taste test 100% cocoa with added Sugar, or Ginger, or Cocoa Honey. Was a fun process!

And then a fresh brownie with pure cocoa.

This was the small local chocolate company!

Stopped for dinner because Throttlemeister recommended this pizza. It was good the owner is from Italy. Yummy

It was a great day in Mindo! Small town in the mountains, but casual and fun to hang out!
