Running Fat!

" And for some reason my bike is getting about 20% less milage than MoBill's ?"

If your bikes running fat (too rich) now at low altitudes, what are you expecting once you reach the real mountains. It will probably be impossible to start, or keep it running when you come to a stop. But I'm sure somebody can cure that for you with all the bikes shops in that part of the world.

Please keep up the photos, nice to see a different part of the world.

I like the picture with the turbans too. Keep the fun coming, double points for flowers.

There has got to be at least one front page shot in that post.. I see 3 or 4 that should make it. Jealous.

Point of Trivia

Did you know that I was among the first civilians (including Indians) to ever travel that road? It was 1990 and I had taken the bus to Ladakh from Kashmir. Fighting was fierce around Dal Lake then and they cancelled all transoprtation past Srinagar (and most of it TO Srinagar). The road you are on was built by and for the Army only. I was stuck in Leh for weeks and finally they allowed half a bus load of forieners on a bus- the rest of the passengers were military. We were the first non military guys to ever go there (legally I guess). I don't know if they opened it just to get us out of there or if they were planning on doing it anyway, but they have opened it every summer since then as far as I know. I remember it was July 10th because it's my birrthday and July 10th both began and ended and we were still on the bus (often on the roof). That was the day I turned 25.

My father in law travelled that very road (srinagar to leh) in 70's many times when he was working with geological survey of india. He told me that they would take about 10 days to traverse which now usually take 20 hrs.

I guess you are partially right because there was NO ROAD when he did it

That must have been real adventure. The Srinigar to Leh road was spectacular and much more easy than the Leh to Manali route. Both were awesome! I envy the guys exporing the area 20 years before me. I once met an old Austrian who had led people from wherever the road ended to Kathmandu when it too a couple of weeks to walk there. I MET this guy- not read about him in some 100 year old book. It must have been truly something before the cars got there.

Still such a facinating area. Really a special place in the world.

Edit: That section from Srinagar to Leh took two days when I did it- and that part had been open to the public for a while. 20 hours now? It must be a great ride!

For hippies and "counterculture" the place to be is the Parvati Valley particularly Kasol.

That was true then too. Kulu valley as well. The place is so beautful I can't describe it.

All I can do is try to imagine what you experienced today, and I confident that my imagination is falling well short of your actual experience!
Thanks for the ride!

Wow, you guys are really making good time!

Looks like you picked a beautiful day to cross the Rhotang La. For those who don't know, "Rhotang" means "pile of corpses" in Tibetan.

Didn't now that!

Great day to cross that pass. The views are stunning!
That pass looks great from a distance... you can follow the road on and on and on if you really look at that picture.
