Might take you up on that. We'll see how our routing goes.....we have to put in nearly 300 miles a day. At a max speed of 50ish MPH, thats some long ride days. :)

cbolling...

Ahhh. It's you. I had read your thread previously. Enjoying running the zuma around?

My longest 1 day trip to date was a 400 mile round trip to Flagstaff and back. That was on the stock seat....and seriously prompted looking into improved seating options. Stock is great for dainty little 115 pound college girl butts driving 1.4 miles to class....not so much for an all day ride. :)

Dude! Awesome, glad to see you are going to make it happen. I'll definitely be checking in as I get the opportunity in the middle of my own crazy ride (upgraded from a scoot this time around to a 125cc three wheeler).

Glad to see you decided to go the simple route with the gas cans and good deal on the upgraded shock. I bet you will just purr right along!

Thank god the Buddy is a four stroke. ;)

Trackpete,

thanks for the good words my friend. I have been watching your blog as well. Quite the little run you are on. I am thrilled with the idea of the mototaxi moving you along down there. Such a good read. Do be safe out there... good luck.

wanna bECO,

well I live in Phoenix, but don't work here very much. Most of the work I do is touring or just out of town. You play locally?

A quick update. Departure tomorrow is being delayed a bit, due to an apparent last minute charging system problem on Deans scoot. Gonna dig into it early tomorrow morning and see if we can't sort it. Fingers crossed it is something simple relating to the voltage regulator. Can't see how it would be a sudden failure of the stator or rotor...this scoot has 12,000 miles on it with no issues, and we haven't been screwing around in there at all. Wish us luck.

Am currently working up my pack. When I get it done...will snap a few shots.

By the way, anyone ever seen a scooter with highway pegs?

:)

Ok, pretty much packed and ready to go!

So yeah....2.3 gallons of extra gas on the back there. If my fuel mileage holds where it has been (80 ish MPG....not holding my breath on keeping that number) then we should have an effective range of ~300 miles. On the seat in the drybag is sleeping bag/bedroll/frogg toggs. Between the legs there is cloths in the red drybag. Unfortunately, i have to carry a backpack. All it has is my laptop and the various chargers and whatnot for my ipod/garmin/cell phone. Under the seat is tools:

This, plus a spare throttle cable, spare rear brake cable, spare variator belt, a flat tire patch kit.... can't remember what else. Probably the heaviest part of my load, realistically. The tools are heavier than any one part of the rest of it.

Oh yes....and my little home made highway pegs:

Just a piece of black pipe from Home Depot and a few u-bolts...about 10 minutes with a drill press and a few more with a can of rustoleum (yeah, I'm no painter like pop-in-law....looks like crap but will get me there). Makes for a really comfortable riding option. I can still fit my feet up next to drybag, or feet on pegs, or ankles resting on pegs. With my bedroll behind me as a backrest, this should be a nice ride.

Experienced people....riddle me this? I should increase my preload on the shock to compensate for additional weight, yes? Then screw around with the Fast/Slow speed adjustment to tailor it for riding taste?

Ok, so as I said previously, Deans scooter appears to be having a charging issue. New battery today solved starting problem, but tail lights and headlight are running very dim. All signs point to voltage regulator...which should be easy to come by at local scooter shop...unless its just a harness that has pulled loose? Fingers crossed it will solve easily, and we can get rolling and get up past Flaggstaff tomorrow.

Got the ipod loaded with some good tunes, got the camera phone ready to take lots of photo's. Light on clothes and long on miles to go. Lets get going.

Be safe all.

Not anymore. Played here a bunch in the 90's but now I'm too old and too married. As supportive of music as my wife is, she demands a real paycheck. And you might know how the clubs pay here, or should I say, DON'T pay here. I can;t live on splitting the door 4 ways anymore. I just do silly stuff like this...

Well...they made it to Payson...

...and were planning on finding somewhere to stay for the night between there and Flagstaff. The adventure begins...

I'll try and get a better link going for the map in the future.

Flagstaff this morning...

Guess it was fairly slow up the hill, and leaving town with all the holiday SUV travelers wasn't the best, but they made it safe, found a campsite last night, and are in Flagstaff now for some food. I think he'll sneak on some interwebs here shortly and update you folks with some pics.
