Accolades, Bugs and Suggestions

Craftycoder,

Thanks for the very nice mapping system you've put together. Your site has a strong potential for becoming THE go-to site for DS Mapping. Your routing tools are manifold superior to anything else I've used. I've been working on mapping at the website and have a few comments/suggestions I hope you can address and/or take into consideration.

1) Would it be too much to ask that you reduce the height of the menu/banner bar at the top of the site, allowing for greater mapping area? Even using a light browser (Chrome) with little overhead on the top and maximizing the web page over two displays, the extra mapping area would improve usability.

2) I tried uploading a GPX (generated using MapSource) and keep getting an error "This file already uploaded as Seven Mile and Waterloo Dual Sport Rides." I've tried uploading using different map names and options, but nothing has worked. Can you shed some light on what might be causing this?

3) I was constructing a private map (tracks/route). I created several sections of tracks, saving often to avoid losing my work. Then, on the latest track, I saved the track and noticed that a large section of it did not get saved. I rebuilt the section of the track that did not get saved, saved it again, and the same thing happened: I lost the same section of track. I'm wondering, Is there a limit on the number of nodes/waypoints per given track section? Also, it would be nice to have an autosave option, just in case . . .

Thanks,
Sal

The track already exists on the site:
http://www.dualsportmaps.com/?link=103597

Are you trying to upload the same track? Or is it completely different?

Yes, THAT map does exist, but the one I am trying to upload has a different name and is in the Mojave National Preserve.

The name you give it on the website is irrelevant. Someone else has uploaded that EXACT GPX file already (though it may be private which is a bit of a flaw). The system does not allow you to do that. Open the GPX file in a text editor and change the title inside the GPX or make any other change to the file (just add a blank line at the bottom for example) and you should be able to proceed as you want. I did this, not to annoy you, but to keep 30 versions of the same Continental Divide map uploaded. Every once and a while this chafes on people, but the intent was good.

It's hard to know why one specific new track is not saving. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If something goes wonky, try reloading the website by hitting F5. You should not have to break the track up into smaller pieces to make it work, but for the sake of debugging it might help you figure out what you are doing wrong.

To get to the website without the banner, use this special link.

I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time. Let me know if you figure out the issue and can narrow it down to something I can act on.

Heres a screenshot of the error, if that helps with credibility . . .

I think I may have found the problem. MapSource was crashing whenever I tried to export the GPX file, but it created the file anyway, so I thought it was OK. Turns out the GPX file is a Zero-Byte file . . . trying to find a workaround utility for converting my GDB (MapSource) file to GPX.

Yep, that will do it...someone else beat you to uploading the empty file.

OK, Roger/Crafty. After struggling with failed updates to MapSource for the past 2 hours or so, I finally got a valid GPX export and am happy to report that the new map was created. Thank you.

Any chance my other issues might be addressed at some point?

I gave you a link to a no page with no banner. We fixed the MapSource problem keeping your file from being uploaded. The last thing was the new track that wasn't saving properly, right? Did you break it into a few pieces to systematically figure out if something specific was going wrong? I really don't have enough to go on at the moment with that one. If you can give me a procedure that makes a reproducible error, I'll fix it. Guaranteed!

This helps a lot! Ultimately, I'd like a "Full Screen" mode including the ability to collapse the left panel--full screen map. I know you want your branding and the copyright, but that footer bar is "wasted" space, too.

I envision when you have your mouse within 5 pixels of the top-left of the screen, you could have a top menu bar drop down with the menu options--one of the buttons would be to disable full screen.

I have dual high-res 30" LCDs at work---AWESOME! At home, I have a single 20"...big bummer compared to my office. I can forget about even using the map on my 15" laptop screen. By the time I zoom in to get the necessary detail, I can see just a couple of miles.
