it's just easy gravel - but you have to go though Erwin to get there.

Not sure what "dirty road" you have in mind right off I-26?

That answers my question. I was looking at a loop from Spruce Pine with 226 and 197. Easy gravel for the 1200gs. Love it!

Up in the trees? That's a new trail system that goes up to the top of Buffalo Mountain I think. I know a bunch of guys I rode mountain bikes with go up there. I don't think anything motorized is allowed.

watch the time of the day... if you ride it west in the late afternoon the sun in your eyes can be a bitch on this road

Good point. I think that if I lead a short ride on Thu...it could be an out n back to Erwin via the beauty spot. Route would be about 1/2 gravel and people could short-cut back to camp on pavement after our lunch at the Hawg n Dog if they wanted to.

We just moved to this area and found that there is a "Western North Carolina" map that shows some of the larger fire roads and gives a great overview of the area. One source is:

https://www.kappamapgroup.com/pc-111...-fold-map.aspx

We've got an older version from a company called "Superior mapping" out of Knoxville, TN. I'm not sure it's still made/sold. And another one from "Universal Map" (that took me to the above link). Both listed at $5.95 (when we bought them a while back).

Hope this helps.

+1 on the roads west of Mills River (and north of there up to Bent Creek).

Here's a great link for downloading free NC county maps in pdf format. They're pretty good about labeling surfaces, although new roads get paved for the first time every year it seems...

http://www.ncdot.gov/travel/statemapping/

Just click on the county you want, then download.

I was on my way home from KY and decided to try a more scenic route.I took the Unicoi exit, off the new I-26 extension, and turned right. After another couple turns I was on a dirt/gravel road.I didn't explore to far because I was in my car and not the truck.

I really need to finish my DS knock off and go ride the area again.

That's the only way you'll ever really find the answers to these burning questions
