Yep, you are going to find that Rick's bike is one of the most fun out there. As much as I love my R80 ST, somedays the F 650 is still more fun.

Beautiful job getting it back on the road.

I am getting the hang of it: I think it just "clicked" yesterday on the way home.

today's mission: "shorty-pants DRZ"

got my tags - it's always an experience going to see Mary at the tag office in Madison county. Just picture a single wide, people lining up through the kitchenette, the grandson hanging out next to her, and she just makes it happen: "just sign down here I figure out the rest later". Only took 2 hours - and there where at least 10 folks left when I was done at 5pm.

anyway, links arrived today as well, and since my personal mechanic, ahhh hubby is somewhere in New England I decided to try it myself.

taking the old links out was easy - pressing the bushing out without press is another story...

(it must have been broken before... I swear!)

well, this works too apparently (all the mechanics prob crinch right now )

piece of cake!

links? check
lowering forks? check
finishing the seat? check

result:

a shorty-pants DRZ

Is it Monday yet???

Rick's F650 and the DRZ as a play bike ("swapped" it for the DR).

The Morini is "ours" now, just to make it even, and the Triumph is around somewhere in boxes (I took it apart about 20 years ago... ).

yup - gonna try it at 18mm right now... we'll see how it handles.

The height seems doable now: I can actually get the toes down - not just the tip like a ballerina

As much as I loved the DR, it was just a bit to heavy for me once you get "off-gravel" and a bit to uncomfortable for longer trips, so splitting it in two is a logical choice.

As far as the Morini goes, it was my birthday present from Hunter long time ago, so I just can't re-gift it .

The Triumph - it's a '69 TR6 - needs a total rebuild, so until we get an Alaskan Winter that will not happen in the near future.

How low can you get the DRZ seat height? Will it be low enough for you?

Out of curiousity I checked out the seat height specs of a few bikes for comparison. (used newer years specs)

DRZ400E = 37.2"
DRZ400S = 36.8"
WR450F = 38.6"
XT225 = 31.9"
XT250 = 31.9"
CRF250X = 37.7"
KTM300 = 38.78"

Looks like you started out with the "shortest of the tall bikes" to shorten up. Also the weight of the E is very good, 262 lbs (2005).

For a lower bike the XT's are much lower, than all the others. They don't "look" as off road capable, but I have a 225 and am always impressed with how good it is. It's missing the HP of the others, but being so low & easy to ride I can ride it much "closer to the edge" and can always catch up in the curves. It tops out at 82 mph indicated, but folks say the true speed is about 75.

The Honda is on the list because I recently saw one that an inmate had plated. He said it was great as a D/S, gets 70 mpg & weighs 226 lbs. (but the spec sheet for the 2012 sayit's 253 lbs now). I keep thinking about trying a ligher bike on the trails. Looks like the KTM300 2-stroke is the one to try.

I can't wait to see your new bike. I've never riden with an E. The S that I had was way heavier, 40 lbs is huge. A totally different bike.

Probably the best weight reduction mod I've on the DRZ is getting a Super Tenere. I get back on the Z and it feels like a feather weight! I actually pulled a muscle in my back cause it felt so damn light and I went to throw it around the garage to get it out of the way.

I guess "Super" does mean heavy...

I really would like to get an adventure bike...someday. But not ready to pay for one right now. Maybe in another year or so.
