I did use my GPS, however did not save any info. I found the maps we purchased locally were extremely accurate and gave all the detailed information. Degree of difficulty is indicated on each trail and very useful.
KLR's are not the best for scaling rock inclines/steps and running through the dunes.
The maps were $11.95 each, waterproof and tear resitant. (They don't require batteries, the -C temps. did not effect them and they don't quit for no apparent reason )

Started up my bike this morning to go get some supplies at shoppers
drug mart and headed down the street when I realized my back break was
basically useless. I turned and accelerated to the next stop sign and
again no back break. Confused I looked down to discover all my oil,
the lifeblood of my motorcycle, was quickly leaking into the ground.
"Ahh SHIT!"
Ignition off. Jump off the bike. Time for some damage control. I
quickly looked for the source of the leak fearing a lost drain plug or
worse a cracked case. Then I noticed the oil was leaking from the
cover for my front sprocket.
This could be two things the first it's leaking from my shifter
however unlikely or it's coming from the drive shaft. My mind starts
to race imagining blown bearing and splitting my engine open to
attempt a repair all the while hope in its something easier. Thinking
back the bike was running fine so that's a good sign
Upon pushing the bike home, following the trail of bike blood left on
the road, I park and pull out my tools. Luckily all that was wrong was
the seal behind the front sprocket had popped out. I removed it and
now I just need to get a new one. Looks like I'll be off the bike for
a few days.

Looks like I over filled the oil and blew out the seal. Seal is also 10+ years old so I don't feel to bad. Apparently this is a bit of a known issue for DRs, the will blow this seal if the bike is cold and overfilled. I have a new one being delivered today so I should be back up and riding right away. Makes me glad I'm getting out and doing some good shakedown riding before we leave. I'll be sure to pack an extra seal for our trip just in case.

Also a good opportunity to slap on my 14 tooth front sprocket and see how she goes.

On the downside my bike now really needs a wash, but the upside is my chain is nice and oiled.

Well, I'm here. Took us one day to get to the South end of Salt Lake City, hit Rocky Mountain ATV, and by noon we had a room and went riding. We are in Green River in a seedy motel. The motel we stayed in last year isn't open for the season yet. First half day ride yesterday was rough, but we survived. Blowing like a hurricane out in the White Wash dunes. I'll take some pictures today.
