Vista hcx... Battery issues?

I purchased used on flea bay. I had trouble with it when I put in freshly charged NMiH batteries. It would power up and as soon as I hit a button, it will shut off. Over and over this happened. I got it to stay on once for a couple of hours and then it did it again. I selected the setting for batt type in set up menu (volts?) I put in fresh alkaline and so far no problem. I emailed the seller about a return, but wanted to see if anyone has had issues with different batt types before I give up on this unit.

I had a similar problem using a set of PowerEx NiMH batteries in a Delorme PN-40. An older PowerEx charger said they were fully charged and ready for use. When I plugged them into a PowerEx WizardOne charger, the charger rejected 1 cell.
