Still in shock.

Riding to the post office from work, it's a pretty quiet 4 lane road (2 lanes in going in each direction) with a wide asphalt median, getting ready to brake for a 4-way Stop; I'm in the left lane. A Prius in the right lane ahead of me by about 50 feet begins braking as a normal car would (distance to stop sign and rate of deceleration). I'm riding in a very mellow mood and begin braking early, using both front and rear brake lightly, but mostly just engine braking by rolling off the throttle slowly. At this point, the Prius is about a car length from the Stop and moving at a crawl. I am now about 20 feet from the car and closing the distance to it quickly, down shifting and braking in earnest for the stop. Now, the Prius turns it's wheels hard to the left and accelerates to make a U-Turn without ever reaching the Stop or coming to a stop, cutting across my path in the left lane. I'm in Panic "OH S*&T" Mode grabbing about all the brake I can, wind up coming to a complete stop about a few feet from her driver's door. She finally sees me, but doesn't stop, just keeps making the most crazy U-Turn I've every seen with a big "Oh, excuse me" face. I didn't move for a bit, just stood there in disbelief. I wasn't angry, but dumbfounded... thinking if I was a few seconds farther up the road, it would have ended badly.

It's a little different in Detroit

Had an odd one today. I was on my way home from work, I was coming home late and a big storm front was rolling in. I was trying to make some time since the weather forecast was calling for possible hail. I was chugging along, about 7-10mph above the limit, when a big old sedan gets right up on my ass. You know, the big old barges where the car is worth maybe $1500 but the moron behind the wheel has put $3500 worth of enormous rims on it.

Anyway, said moron is about 10-20 feet off my rear tire, flashing his high beams at me and just generally being a dick. No idea why, he could have easily gotten around me if he really needed to go 15 over, since we were on a 6-lane road. This goes on for 3-4 blocks, then he whips around me, coming into my lane, only to get caught at a light. I pulled up to the light about 5 seconds after Speed Racer did and I looked over at him to give him the palms-up WTF gesture, but he's already rolling his window down and leans out and yells at me, "M****rf****r, if I had my .40 right now, you'd be dead!" Light turns green, and I let him take off, giving him a good head start on me. He doesn't need a .40 to kill me in that hulking POS he's driving, anyway... I'll take a chance of hail over a chance of getting run over any day.

Sometimes I don't get people in this town. Still have no idea what I could have possibly done to piss him off so much...

Riding the highway recently between two local communities. This is a two lane road, speed limits vary between 55 and 65, big wide shoulders and frequent passing zones, not heavily trafficked. I was coming off a four mile downhill with lots of 30 to 40 mph curves. You make a final right hander, then the road opens up and straightens out, heading into an area that is generally thick with deer.

I was doing about 7 to 10 over when a guy in an Audi came rolling up behind me. He clearly wanted to be be going a lot faster, which is fine with me, but I'm not going to do it in this deer infested area. At this point we have a broken yellow line on our side, no oncoming traffic, and a half mile of visibility out front. I pull a little further into the right track hoping he will get off my rear wheel. He finally careens around me, but never leaves the right lane. His left tires are riding right on the center line as he squeezes by and back in right in front of me.

I backed off, not knowing what he would do if Bambi decided to make an appearance. An SUV came up right then and passed in the normal and polite manner. Driver kind of looked at me and shrugged. I shrugged back. What are you gonna do?

Must not have been a law-abiding Episcopalian, then. "Motherfucker" explains a lot about who it was. Asshole needs his rear glass to explode and a big .45 fucking hole to appear in the windshield. Might make him think about who he messes with. Typical Ghetto Dweller, been there.

Woodward, passing north through Highland Park. So not really in Detroit, but that town is worse than most of Detroit anyway. I've had issues on the Davison, too, but this is the first time anyone's actually expressed a desire to kill me.

I stay out of Detroit. I have no valid reason to go there, and as a caucasian, I am in the minority. There is no EMS to speak of, the PD is worse than second rate, and most of the law-abiding population has bailed out to the suburbs. Sorry you have to work there.

It's not the first time someone's expressed a desire to kill you, it's just the first time someone said it to your face. Woodward and 6 mile is not a good place to be, even in daylight. You'd be safer on the Lodge or I-75 because the state police patrol there. At least, nobody's going to run up when you're stopped at a traffic light and carjack you on the freeway.

Regardless of how fast you were driving, you were in the way and should have moved right.

See my post above about 'if someone has to tell you to move, you're DHUA.'

Not a commute (although I do), but, on the way home from the shop, taking some nice twisties (through Devil's Hopyard State Park in CT, if you know it) to start scrubbing the new tires. Saw a fire truck, and ambulance and several volunteers going the other way. This can't be good. Slowed it down, several miles later came across three state cops around the remains of a WRX, wadded up into a tree. Almost certainly a one vehicle accident.

Spring has hit New England, lots of young boys and their fast toys back out on the roads, stay safe everyone.

Um, he was on a two lane road. That's ONE LANE EACH WAY.

WTF was he going to move over to, the dirt shoulder?

Spring has hit down here in northern Arkansas and the Ozarks, also. I commute all year, and I didn't see another bike on the road from December to February (which is not to say there weren't other riders out there; I just didn't see them).

Now I'm seeing bikers on my daily commute, and lots of bikers riding each weekend. Soon the cruiser and Gold Wing crowd will begin to descend on my little slice of paradise, undoubtedly drawn by fantastic lakes and good twisties.

A couple years ago, we averaged one death per week on Push Mountain Road for most of the summer, and it was always someone on a Gold Wing or a cruiser/standard bike who "failed to negotiate a turn." Last year we only had a handful of deaths, which is still too many. Fatal collisions with logging trucks were a frequent occurrence, too. And it was rarely a kid on a sportsbike. It was riders who were old enough to know better.

Hopefully this year everyone will ride within their abilities and stay safe.

I assumed he was joking, but you maybe right. He didn't understand the situation.

This reminded me of one.

I was heading home after work on a 4 lane divided highway, cruising in the right lane. Coming up on a clover leaf merge lane from another highway I notice a slow moving car and a tricked out M3 riding his tale. I move over to the left lane since I can see this all unfolding. Car 1 merges normally, M3 guy merges right behind him and immediately into my lane without a signal or pause to look. I'm right at the B pillar so I know he can't see me, window down so I give him a nice horn blast, grab some brake, and move as far over to the shoulder. No break down lane, just a guard rail here.

After he goes around car 1 he moves back into left lane and I pass him a couple hundred yards further up. He then proceeds to chase me, weaving through traffic behind me all the way to my exit and pulls up next to me at the next double light.

At this point I'm looking for quick exits in case this guy is mental. Four guys in the car, not good. Guy rolls up... and apologizes profusely. Slightly dumbfounded I nod and say something like "be careful out there" and take off as the light changes.
