Matthew and I would like to share our journey with you.

Follow along as we blast through the backcountry...

To see a special place in some of the least visited spots.

We share some wonderful camping spots...

and other fun things.

The views are sublime.

Day 1, Wednesday June 1st, 2011

Day 1 will be Matthew's longest ride in a single day. The Grand Canyon is only 200 miles from home,
but we are planning to wrap around the east end to reach the North Rim.
I planned to take the full day off from work so we could take our time with frequent stops today.
An emergency required me to work in the morning so it was about 1:15 PM before we left home.

We shoot up I-17 to Flagstaff.

Matthew hangs tough, and we make good time with minimal stops.

The Bridge in Cameron

Matt keeps a death-clinch on my belt.

The scenery across the Navajo Nation is great, but boring for us since we've seen it all too many times.

Across the Desert

Our trip will be 5 days of riding and 4 nights of camping.

We stop for a butt break at the Navajo Bridge over Marble Canyon and the Colorado River, a great photo stop.

Matthew has shown some interest in photography, so look for the watermark on the bottom of his pictures.

It was windy.

Vermillion Cliffs

The Kaibab Plateau ahead promises to deliver cool forests and lush meadows.

One of my Favorite Images from the Entire Trip. Never be afraid to point a camera towards the sun... You just never know.

Kaibab Plateau

Halfway up the side of the Kaibab Plateau we stop for pics. I saw the sunlight on the Vermilliion Cliffs...

Matthew saw the homestead below.

In no time we leave the scorching desert behind for the forests of the Kaibab Plateau.

We are still riding hard as the sun slowly sets.

We just may make our planned campsite before dark. I have a friend/co-worker who has already set up camp
just off the 22. It would be nice to spend an evening with them.
I thought I knew the way....

We make it to the 22, aka West Side Road.

Excellent

The north rim, and the ride up from Jacob's Lake in the pines are spectacular-

I wished we had this sunset every night of the trip....

......

Deer Abound!

After racing all the way past the Big Springs work camp, I realized we had missed our turn.
It was getting pretty dark, and Matthew was too tired for a lengthy backtrack/search.
We gave up on making it to our freind's camp. We found a nice spot for our own as the stars came out.

That's a long day for a 10 year old, all after 1:15 PM.
The forecast calls for a low of 26 F. Brrrrr!

Your hittin' some emotional heart strings here...

As the family spent today at our oldest sons college graduation. Oh the times us dads have with the youngin's. It's really never enough!!!

I don't need to tell you, but I will. Do cherish every moment together, it does really go much too fast.

To Matthew-what a dad you have, to expose you to so much that is out there.
Have Fun.

Great shots together. Thank you for sharing on 'this' dad's special day.
