Pissa! I tried to get one last summer, but all they had were those made in china ones, with the round bent brim. The body of the had barely covers the top of your head. Good hats are hard to come by.

All of you. This is not a Chineese hat topic, its a hockey topic. It might be the only chance we have at a decent hockey topic untill October.

I was barely 6 years old during this game but it probably was the beginning of my hockey fandom. I'd never seen hockey before this game. I wondered why Al Michaels was talking about croutons and icing, my two favorite foods at age 6. Now I guess it was Krutov, not croutons.

As the game plays before me now I wonder what kind of guts it took to play goaltender in that era. Leather pads stuffed with wool that soak up water and gain weight as the game goes on, a pair of paper plates with eyeholes cut out and rubberband straps for a facemask...

...No markings of any kind on the boards or ice, interesting to compare to our modern game. It appears that the red line is not even broken. Its my understanding that the broken redline is there from black and white media days so when watching on TV or looking at b&w newspaper pictures, you could tell which line was which.

This is great TV.

Who here actually plays hockey? I bet there are a couple of us out there. Wouldn't it be freaking awesome to get together one year, middle of winter, and have an ADVRider hockey game?

Eh, it'll never happen, but it'd be still really freaking sweet. Maybe we should just go ahead and make ADVRider hockey jerseys. I call #21!

Try spelling it your way in a locker room up here so we can listen to the laughs.

Stick to cars, you know a thing or two about them at least.

Sounds good.

Used to play in a pretty rough league years ago. First shift out in the game, as the defenceman your job was to clear the puck out of the zone, thru the ref. Yes, thru him. Nail the fucker as hard as you could, so he'd stay the fuck out of the team's way for the rest of the game. Same with the opposing goalie. First few shots on goal, hit him in the mask, hard as you could.

Worked all the time. We didn't lose many games.

Still wanna be the ref? I'm game if you are.

You guys think that the Hansen brothers were just a movie invention? You've never played hockey in the prairie leagues. Used to play against a penitentiary in one league. Not the guards, the inmates, no shit. Good team, lots of broken sticks in them games.

They were not so fun to play against. There's one guy in particular who was about 5'11" and 230 pounds w/no fat on him. He was the one who played in Finland. Excellent skater and puck control. I invariably was playing defence when he was on the ice. The only way I knew to stop him was to basically put him in a bear hug and PLANT my skates into the ice, full-on stop. I would slow him down enough that he didn't score but the pinched nerves in my back (from all the compression it took to stop him) got to be frustrating. The refs took pity on me and let me get away with such blatant fouls -- they said it was the best idea they had seen. He usually scored at will.

The league I'm in right now is by far the friendliest hockey league I've ever played in. I've had people on the OPPOSITE team congratulate me when I score a goal. It's a nice change. I've heard similar stories from people who've played in Thailand and UAE -- that hockey is sometimes more fun in such places because people are so laid-back about it.

One of my best friends played for the Ithica Red Wings when he was dropped back into the minors. He played for the Amercs, too.

Hit me and you're a gonner But I will let you play as long as it's
fair...

I played for a team who's goalie used to wear one of those spray on
masks (USAH made them illegal years ago). He got hit one night right
above the eye. Detached retina, blurry vision for a while--whole
deal. He plays with better gear now

And you're right, I never played (or ref'ed) in the prairie leagues.
