Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, Maine

In honor of being happily married for 13 years, the Mrs. and I decided to take a long weekend and ride up to Maine, one of the many 'must see' places on our list. This would be our longest trip on the motorcycle to date.

The steed on the morning of departure....

Mrs. stankenpankens....

We would be leaving the kids with the grandparents, as I don't currently have the GS hacked. Plus, this was to be our, ahem, anniversary trip!
Hannah was not happy we were leaving....

Starting mileage. What I didn't get in the shot was the thermometer, which read 88 degrees at 7:30am....

Leaving home, we rode through New Jersey and the metro New York area as quickly as possible. By the time we got into Connecticut it was a sweltering 95 degrees!

Hydrate!!!

It was good to see Linda was still smiling....

I didn't realize there were still Mobil stations around. Down in the peoples republic of New Jersey they were all replaced with Lukoils....

We made it into Mass, all sweaty and grimy. This was the nicest, most well appointed rest stop we encountered in the commonwealth the whole trip. Info building closed for repairs, nasty outhouses, etc. The rest of the rest areas we stopped at in Mass were nothing more than a turnoff with parking spaces. NO RESTROOMS, NO NOTHING. The last rest stop we had the misfortune of stopping at in Mass didn't have any services. I had to use the restroom, but none was available. I pulled into the parking lot, removed my helmet, and was greeted with the strongest wall of urine stink cloud I ever wiffed. NASTY!! I gotta say, what a shame.

BTW, I didn't get the sign on the side of the building that stated, in effect, "No peeing on the side of the building!" Perhaps if the commonwealth considered using funds to provide adequate facilities rather than buying signs?
Sigh....

The bike was running flawlessly. We decided the Silver Pig needed a proper name. So our quest was nigh. We would name her during the trip....

As mentioned, this day was nothing but HOT!! As we approached Portsmouth, NH, a cold front blasted us with 50-60MPH winds, lightning, and rain. The temperature plummeted so quickly, it felt like we rode into a freezer! (95 degrees to 68 degrees in a matter of minutes!) We were getting slammed with rain as I saw a Holiday Inn on the side of the road. I made a dive for it like my marriage depended on it.
So for day one we have experienced heat, humidity, rain, wind, cold.... The Hotel was a nice reprieve.....

After a nice warm shower and dinner, we crashed. Hopefully day two will bring better weather as we cross into Maine....

Day 2

The morning started sunny and cool. We packed up and bolted across the bridge into Maine. Linda, who is a devout shellfish-a-holic, wanted to live her dream: To eat lobster for breakfast, to eat lobster for lunch, and to eat lobster for dinner. Now to find an establishment to assist in this endeavor....
We made it! The obligatory sign shot for posterity.

Cruising up Rt. 1 we came upon this sign....

That'll do! We pulled up and saw they didn't open till 8:00am. It was 7:55.

We're not in Jersey anymore.

The view from our table. There is a really neat bird perched atop the light house. Blue with white chest, red under the beak. Didn't have my field guide so I could ID the thing.

It seems we found the right place!

Lobster omelette!

Satisfied with breakfast!

Linda found the camera and decided to try her hand at shooting from the pillion....

The view frome Linda's seat....

Cunsulting my trusty 4 dollar GPS device. Never let me down....

Following Rt. 1, we made our way to the sea coast town of Rockland for lunch.

Lobster roll! Linda is in hog heaven.

Looking forward to more... headed to Acadia for the 1st time in mid-July.

Too bad your blitz through CT was on our nastiest collection of roads - but at least our rest stops have flushers

Thanks for the kind words, DCrider!
Patch, our only regret is we didn't stay longer! We fell in love with Bar Harbor.

Day 2 cont.

Some towns and scenery we rode through from Rockland to Bar Harbor. Linda has taken to shooting from the pillion....

We came upon this cool bridge just before the town of Bucksport....

Some interesting history of this magnificent area. Linda is not nearly as interested in history as I am, plus nature was calling. So a few quick shots and we were off....

We stopped at this little deli to answer the call. Notice the skeeved out look on Linda's face. That's because....

....she had just used a porta-john for the first time in her life! What a woman.

I wish you could smell the fresh air on this day! This lobster place had it all. Just behind the bushes lies a huge wood burning outdoor stove setup, with POTS of cooking shellfish. Smelled alot better than the Mass. rest stops.

Bummer of a place to live, eh?

The lack of a proper polarizer on the 30 dollar camera of ours prevents us from seeing the unbelievable clarity of the water....

Day 2 cont.

Well, we made it to Bar Harbor! First order of the day: Shower, change, and walk off the last two days! It was still light out, so we were eager to check out the town. And eat lobster....

How would you like to wake up to this view every morning?

This is the spot where at low tide you can walk across an exposed sand bar to Bar Island. More on that later.

Water is crystal clear. Again, sucky camera.

While wandering for a place to eat, we came apon this....

Dubs are for chumps!

Front view of the functional hood ornament of the Ford.

Driver's view of the same piece.

Can you say leaf spring?

Check out those cannons!

In search of crabby patties, we came apon this....

This town is very pedestrian freindly, and as far as food goes, if you like seafood this is Mecca.

Ahh, mission accomplished!

Hmm, cheaper than Red Lobster, but better!

I spotted my first moose!

Our place of lodging. The Bar Harbor Manor. We stayed in the suite that had a hot tub, very highly recomended.

Day 3

After a restful evening, we were bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to explore!
Our Hotel for the weekend....

But first, breakfast. No pictures were taken of this shameful foray of flying food. Needless to say, we found the best strawberry rhubarb on earth at Jeannies Great Maine Breakfast. It was awesome.
Try it, you'll love it!

Now to walk off the massive weight gain....

You can charter this boat, a four masted schooner. I have horrible motion sickness, so I didn't go. If I were a fisherman, my children would starve....

Getting my morning excercise....

And she's in the water!

I took this shot of this little bungalow....

....then I turned to my left and took this shot of the view these people have....

Here is the view of Bar Island at low tide, taken from Bridge St. You can walk across the sand bar to the island. At high tide this is all under ten feet of water!

I couldn't help it!

Crystal clear water....

Look! Lunch!

Mmmm! Ladies and gentlemen, we have an addict.

The view back from Bar Island....

In this shot you can see Cadillac Mountain, elevation 1530'. This would be our goal for the day.
