Finally saw a new one on the highway this week

i was driving home on a 4 lane this week. a 4 lane with
a wide center median, so i could get a good look at
oncoming traffic.

i spotted a goldwing coming toward me. it was black
with a the silver "lowers".
i craned my neck as i met it and got a good profile
view... awesome new look. the contrast of colors
breaks down the massive effect nicely. somehow it
gives an impression of a performance bike, which fits
the fact that (unbiased, i don't own one) that big six
IS a performance tourer, given that American touring
doesn't often include twisties, and i CAN attest from
experience that a big tourer CAN wear a tire to the
edge with the right attitude and rider.

1) if my big Venture (with 100 horses /100 footpounds
itself) weren't paid for,

and

2) a new Wing wouldn't set me back -what, $25 large?

i'd love to have a new Gold Wing.

It's hard to beat a wing for serious long distance touring......

You've got a good eye! Unfortunately, the Park Service closed the Peaks this fall. So, I am not sure if or when it may re-open.

wow, how much does the trailer weigh loaded up? The stock alternator has enough power for all the electronic gizmos and that fridge? Any more pics of the trailer setup?

This is someone else's 83 Gl 1100:

...which is just like mine minus the bugs, dirt, crash damage...

When I picked up the sport bike that Mrs. Steingar detests, she mentioned that she really missed our occasional rides. I thought about getting a scooter, but I picked up the Wing for about the same money. Those who dislike Wings have not ridden them. They're all over the place here, but we are just up the road from the factory that made the vast majority.

Glad to see there are a few riders on here smart enough to appreciate the Goldwing. I started with an '85 GL1200LTD several years ago, rebuilt it from the ground up, and still had lots of problems with it, all of them electronic/fuel injection related. I finally got fed up with it, sold it, and got a '95 1500SE. MAJOR improvement. I have put over 40,000 miles on it, and the only problems (again) have been electronic (some of the gadgets quit working, I never tried to fix them because I didn't need or use them anyway) I know most Goldwing riders love gadgets, but I would be happy if it didn't have any at all. I got it for it's comfort and carrying capacity. My only issue has been poor gas mileage, but I guess that has to be expected with a bike of that size.

I've noticed that almost nobody on this forum likes Goldwings or cruisers. I have both. Most seem to feel that a road bike needs the handlebars down by the front axle, and the pegs about where the rear turn signals are.

I had a 79 Wing for a few years, outfitted with a full Vetter set. Took several multi thousand mile trips on it with all my camping gear. It was difficult for me to get comfortable on it with my long legs but I improved the ergonomics somewhat by moving the seat up and back. The old Wing was excellent at cruising along the highway with a big load but handling on corners was not great, and the low ground clearance prevented me from getting to many great camp sites next to a river or creek that required rolling over rocks or roots. I now have an old Silverwing Interstate (not the scooter) that fits my needs better.

Just picked up my '12 Airbag model in January. It's my 2nd 1800 and my 3rd Wing. Not a perfect bike, but it's comfortable and fun to ride.

What a beauty! My next bike, after I get tired of the ST. My only concern is the weight.

It's a behemoth for sure. It's much lighter once you get underway, and the weight is slung really low. I've got a 32" inseam and flat foot it easily, with a bend at the knees to boot. Like I said, it ain't perfect, but it'll eat up miles like no one's business.
