Unfinished Projects 2012

Jason Friend invited me to show my bike in the 2012 Unfinished Projects Show. It opens at 6pm on Saturday February 25th. at 275 8th Street (Second Floor) in San Francisco. So my bike along with an Indian four project by Red Fred Johansson and a few dozen other unfinished projects and art work will be on display. Check it out.

37 bobber

I stopped by Red Fred's place today to use his lathe and got a chance to take a few pictures of fellow SFMC member Ron Bond and his 1937 Indian bobber. Ron said he plans on going to the "Unfinished Projects" show this weekend and he's a good friend the organizer Jason Anderson (www.neoedo.com). I can't make it on Saturday but the show runs for two weeks so I'll stop by and take some pictures next week some time.

Chain Guard

The fender for 1937 is the same shape as 1938 but the lower bracket is different. The brake switch on a 37 is behind the bracket and the 38 the switch is on the front. Unfortunately nobody reproduces the 1937 bracket so I had to make one.

Fortunately I had access to an original paint 1937 chain guard.







Note the pin striping. Doesn't look very professional. Hard to say if it came from the factory like this or if it was added later. I've seen other factory pin striping for the late 30's and it has a similar look. With a little practice I think I can do better.





After months of work I finally have the chain guard mounted. Next Post: Speedometer.

Speedometer

Working on an Indian and buying parts is expensive. And the most expensive accessory for me was the Speedometer. In 1937 a speedometer was an option. In 1938 and later Indians the tank is hollowed out so the speedometer sits down in the center console. But in 1937 the speedometer Sits above the tank. It was actually one of the aspects on the 37 that applied to me. the speedometer cable on the 1937 looks like a real after thought. It by no means blends into anything. And I have to admit I like that. Two Corbin Speedometers were available in 1937. 100mph and 120 mph. I didn't really care which one I put on the bike. I searched Ebay and the swap meets for two years. At one point I was at the Dixon swap meet and had a 100mph speedometer in my hands. I hesitated, set it down, and walked away. When I went back it was gone. I really kicked myself for that one. It was a good price and was in my hands. So I've learned to do my homework,know the going price and when you see what you want jump on it.



Corbin Speedometers are common. There are a few on ebay all of the time. But they go for $700-$1500. Plus to have them serviced starts at $200. Indian Speedometers have Indian on the face plate and you can find other Corbin speedometers that have the same shell but have a Corbin face plate. I suspect They are all the same.
