great riding

To all in ZA and Namibia..
Had a great ride through your countries ... A little speed bump in Luderitz by way of loosing some gear and a camera to pick pockets ... that is life though...Met a bunch of great people along the entire trip..

Any Riders Planning to travel in the easten United States are welcome to lodge with me in the Virginia mountians... Be aware the this is not a wilderness "cake walk" like you Sissies have in ZA ... our Gound Squirrels can take a man's arm off in the blink of an eye...

Sad news. He leaves a wife and 3 kids. The mood here is very quiet tonight. Apparently after an earlier mild off he forgot to switch off his ABS on his 1200. So he came down the hill sans brakes. It was about 200m long and 40deg angle with a road crossing at the bottom. Gert hit the road and ramped into the 10m wide ravine hitting the steep wall on the other side. Sillystunt and I must have been 20 - 30min ahead of them. When we got back to the tar road, the ambulance was there. Another person who is with us and taking it hard is Colin Gallop who's brother was killed coming home from last years challenge. A totally freak accident that gave me goose bumps when I heard the news. RIP"

That's terrible

It's always horrible to hear of a bad accident. It brings home how easily something like this can happen. I had a similar experience with the ABS in Lesotho we had stopped for a break and I forgot to turn my ABS back on. Heading down a steep gravel pass with a nearly 180 degree turn at the end I realised I had no brakes. I changed down to first and realised I still wasn't going to stop in time and laid the bike down hard. I came to a stop with the back wheel over a very long drop. I still would prefer the option for the ABS to stay in what ever mode it was in or default off, you can still do something about it if you lock up on road but offroad the consequences can be disastrous!

My condolences and prayers to his family and friends.

Nice helmet indeed! Glad you had a good time in RSA.

Stev0 - the SE cant do what you want it to do? No, its not a 100kg lightweight thats for sure. But the proof is in the riding.
