It detects the def.. and the "purity" of the def.
If you dilute it or anything it detects it and shuts you down. It won't let you run it without def... if you did manage to run it out you'd burn out some very expensive components in the 2nd catalytic converter (I've been told).

Is Ford pee the same as Benz pee? ...and are there emissions controls on diesels in CO? If you don't have emissions, has anyone successfully yanked the whole kit and kaboodle? M

Ford, benz, Chevy all the pee is the same. As long as it is ISO 22241 certified it is the same. The only thing that differs is how you put it into the tank. I know my chevy just has a filler neck like a gas tank under the hood. I buy the 2.5 Gallon bottles of DEF at the auto parts store for like $11. The Benz has a special filler neck I believe which means you need a Benz bottle or bring it to the dealer to fill. If I owned the benz I would just buy one original bottle from them and then cut the bottle and use it as a funnel or carefully cut the locking teeth at the base of the bottle cap neck. That way I could unscrew the bottle cap valve so I could refill the OEM bottle with DEF from anywhere. There are emissions tests out here in CO. My Chevy has an emission exempt sticker on the windshield but I think that is only good for 4 years. I haven't really checked that out yet.

That's not possible, as it's an integral part of the electronics. There are sensors throughout the exhaust system that monitor emissions and the converter(s) to determine their functioning and re-generation needs. I've been told that the integrated muffler/converter on semi-trucks is ~$5K. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sprinter one is a couple thousand.

You don't need a special bottle .. but if you have the special bottle it is impossible to spill it.
You can just pour it in. Here's a video I made the first time I filled it:

If it's like automotive converters, the "honeycomb" is ceramic. And, yes. That'll crumble, if the casing is dented.

My 6.7L Cummins exhaust, which includes the Catalytic Converter, a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), and a NAC (Nox absorbing catalyst), and muffler, retails for roughly $7,000 and is rated for approximately 100,000 miles. The Urea injection systems are slightly simpler introducing an SCR (selective catalyst reducer) in which the ammonia in the urea will react with the particulate and the NOx, however the costs are somewhat similar.
No one said diesels were cheap...

$7,000 after 100,000 miles? That's not just "not cheap", that's fucking insane. I'm so glad I have a year 2000 PSD.

Cripes.. I hope the MB exhaust system goes further than that.. that'd mean I'd spend $42,000 in 600,000 miles on the exhaust system alone? I could buy another van for that.

If that were the case.. I'd never let the thing get of warranty. I'd keep trading it in (I have a 100K all inclusive warranty on mine).
If it were anyone but Daniel.. I'd question the numbers.. but he does work in Detroit...

Colorado does not have emissions testing. Only some of the counties on the front range have emissions testing.
