Regarding insurance, you might also look into getting it classified as an RV. I think you need certain mechanicals--maybe water and a pooper--to get that classification. But from what I've heard, insurance is less than a normal, daily driver kind of vehicle. But ... I'm just spreading rumor and innuendo.

With the amount of time, money and effort I've put into my build say I put the replacement value of my van closer to $50k (again picking a number out of the air).

Is there a way to insure a vehicle for a value I define as opposed to someone on the other end of the phone who has no idea what I'm talking about?

I saw a bad accident this morning where a really nice vehicle was destroyed through no fault of the owner and it got me to thinking. Sure I have a perfect driving record for over 25 years and have never had an accident (knock on wood) but that doesn't mean I can't have some texting teenager cross the center line and hit me head on...
I have a Westfalia with lots and lots of $$$$ into it. I needed to get an appraisal from a local body shop and send it in. Metlife was pretty easy to work with to adjust the value from a stated 15k (before appraisal) to 42k. Granted I'm paying a bit more, but not too much for the just in case.

You didn't by chance weigh it before you started did you? I'd be curious to see how much mass it adds.

No, I didn't weigh it. But the AX-8 DS Evo is a really light helmet to begin with--it weighed in (size L) at 1514 grams as per WebBikeWorld's review.

I think mine's an XL.

I was going to do some time-lapse photography on the process, but then I realized that I was using my tripod to hold the helmet up.

Paint is interesting stuff. I did some work with PPG Aerospace at one of their paint and glue facilities a few years ago--fascinating!

That adds a very nice finish to the channels. Much aesthetically improved.

I believe you can also hire an independent appraiser to value your property, then contact your agent with the appraised value and get replacement value.
