New member, BC to Alaska

Hello,
I am going to be riding from Southeastern British Columbia to Alaska and back near the end of the month. I was just looking for some advice as far as free camping spots on the alaskan and top of the world highways, shops to do your own oil changes on the way, and any other important things to know about this route. I've been doing a lot of research on my own but I'm looking for first hand experience from people that have already done the trip. Thanks!

If you're planning on staying overnight in PG as you're heading north (or returning south for that matter) and need a free place to camp out, PM me. I'm just west of town and have well over an acre of lawn that you're welcome to pitch a tent on (and a spare room if the weather sucks too much for camping).

Oh... and welcome to the asylum!

We're heading north on Monday from Southern Oregon. Only two weeks to get as much as we can of BC and Alaska. An info on good camping, and good beer would be great.

You all had better hurry, as summer is over, and winter is coming all too quickly up here.

Many places will be closing down on, or shortly after, Labor Day (September 5th, this year) so tourist services will become more sparse and widely separated after that. Nevertheless, we sometimes are treated to beautiful fall weather, with warm days and cool-to-cold nights. Mosquitoes are pretty much gone (but replaced by gnats, noseeums, and whitesox).

Camping sports should be pretty easy to find, as many tourists have already headed back home. Here in Alaska, and most places in the Yukon as well as northern B.C. just about any cleared spot off the highway is fair game for camping. Most Wal-Marts (and they're along most routes in, to, and from Alaska) will let you change your oil in their parking lot and dispose of the oil for you.

This time of year you'd be well advised to be prepared for every kind of weather imaginable. You could swelter in the daytime, and freeze at night. Or think you were going to drown one day and have to breath dust all the next.
