California to Oregon (Portland)
Route Advice to Portland
I'm visiting Portland first week of September. I'm travelling up from the San Francisco Bay Area. Temps are still pretty hot in-land in California so the plan is to stick coast side until I get to Oregon but I don't want to slab it up the 5 or 99 (unless there's good reason to). I don't have days to explore, unfortunately, so my question is what is interesting riding from the California State line to Portland? The only thing I want to avoid is heat. Thanks

So...how's this for a starter...
Crescent City/CA199* to the turnoff in Oregon near Wilderville, north to Merlin and then Wolf Creek. I-5 over the hump to the Glendale turnoff, then Cow Creek north to the freeway again at Tri-cities. Eventually turn off the freeway for good at OR 138, north on this one from Steamboat to Cottage Grove. -its all paved, some of the northern end is nice & swoopy. I rode it last week. After that, The Aufderheide, McKenzie Pass, followed by the last leg into Portland. When in season, the A&W in Oakridge has blackberry milkshakes. * If it isn't too hot, take CA299/96/Waldo Road from Happy Camp over to O'Brien instead. ![]() LARGE map of western Orygun. All the little squiggly blue/black lines are worth investigating. http://www.oldguy.us/roads/or-west/detail-map.html |
