My Suzukis

Well I've owned bikes from all the big four japanese manufacturers plus a Norton Commando so I'm not really biased. But I've had a few Suzukis, and am currently trying to figure out how afford a DR650 without selling my wife or teenagers. First bike (in 1975) was 1972 Suzuki TS50, followed by a 1972 T250, then came a bunch of Yamaha RD's and other stuff. First brand new bike I owned was a 1979 PE175. I raced that a lot locally, and loved it. I traded that on a nearly new GT250X7. Suzuki's last air-cooled two stroke twin. They put it on a diet (dry weight about 130kg!!!!) compared to earlier T250's and GT250's. What a cool bike. It felt like a 125 on steroids. My commute home after my evening shift job was from Dunedin, New Zealand down the twisty road following the edge of the harbour, to a place called Harwood past Portobello (check it out on Google maps). This was the local racer road and I got to know it well! The locals had a habit of driving into the harbour off that road when they were drunk. One week night after midnight I was heading home from work at my usual pace, when I saw some flashing lights a couple of bays back. I figured someone had driven into the drink, and stopped so I could follow the cop and check out the excitement. To my surprise he pulled up behind me and proceeded to give a lecture about how he was sick of scraping people like me off the road! He couldn't ticket me though as he hadn't been able to get near enough on the twisty road to get a fix on my speed. The thought that he might be chasing me hadn't occurred to me 'cause he was so far behind!!! I have no picture of the X7 unfortunately. Fast forward (skipping a number of Yamahas and Kawasakis) to 1985 and my second brand new Suzuki an RH250X (a what?) also known as a TS250X. A water-cooled 250 two stroke trailbike. I did everything on this bike. I commuted on it, and with a couple of extra sets of tyres I roadraced it, enduroed it and did a few 800km road trips on it (including one two up with my fiance on the back to visit my parents......we sent suitcases ahead by bus!!) Here's a picture of her with it from that trip. We'll celebrate 25 years married in April.

My Suzukis.... cont.

After the RH250 there was a wee side track into the world of british bikes with a 1968 Norton Commando (the first year..... very cool.... but ultimately not me) a Kawasaki Z500, and an RZ350 (I also had a couple of RD350LCs a while ago). Then I got the racing bug again and bought a 1972 T250 that someone had (badly) made into a classic racer. It needed help and I needed parts, so I also bought 2 more T250s and a T350 in bits (price was a box of beer!). With a spray can paint job, rearset pegs, a Ducati 900SS bevel drive replica seat and clip-ons it started to come right. I had some fun on that but I noticed another class that looked cool. These were called "bucket racers". The idea is that you build them out of a bucket of bolts. They were built from 100cc 2 stroke or 125cc 4 stroke commuters or trail bikes (no motocrossers etc). I picked up a Suzuki GP100 (rotary disc valve 5 speed single) commuter for NZ$200 but I wasn't happy with some of the threads on the forks so I didn't do much more with it. Then I was coming home one Saturday and around the corner from my house was a garage sale and outside was a cool little roadracer with no engine. A guy had built it in the late '70s for 125 racing witha Honda CR125 motor. It had a kind of mini Norton Featherbed frame with fiberglass tank and seat and a replice of a Honda MT125R fairing. Raced home...measured GP100 engine...raced back measured frame....yeah it will fit! Bought it and wheeled it home (so close no need for trailer). Six weeks later it was up and running with a front exhaust off an RG400 4 cylinder road bike. I read a book on two stroke tuning then dealt to the rotary disc valve with an angle grinder and the ports with a grindstone on a drill. I put on a carb off a GP125 24mm instead of 22mm (not radical)..... Result stock motor with pipe 11.5hp on my mate's dyno.... modified motor 17.5hp.... not bad for a beginner! I had so much fun racing that wee bike, and it brought me my first race wins in 20 odd years of dabbling in racing, when the top 4 or so fast guys stayed home one day. MIss it much, I do.

I've bought my (2008) Suzuki V-Strom DL1000GT from new, have it just over three years and it ticks ALL the motorcycling boxes for me personally, I've fitted a K&N air filter and replaced the rear brake standard line to a HEL braded line and EBC double H pads, so much better brakes and gives confidence. I've dropped the front forks about a quarter of an inch to help with quicker/faster steering, great results on twisties..........fabulous (free) improvement!

Had a lovely run out today, 100 miles covered on nice dry roads with quite a bit of sunshine (for a change), a short time after I got home it started to rain big time.

Here's my pride and joy before the run today;

I use 'WD40' spray mainly to keep the engine department clean, I love it!
