I think what spud has so far is a gusset sorta just a longer funnier shaped one , and with no welding , no cracking, BINGO
i looked into alum billet clamp on with a bolt sticking out but there 20 bucks each OUCH !!!
I see the problem with the supports from TT , but the riders need a few choices here between cost and quality and of course functionality and the spud strut is better IMO, question i have a xr250L coming over for a rack mount this weekend and is the frame the same as the XR650L, i know the racks are the same , just wandering bout the bat box and muffler and all that stuff,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, or is it close enough so i can do the prototype here in the shop,
thanks for stopping by with your input ,,,,,,,,,,,, mike
Doing very well, thank you. Was pretty busy for a month which surprised me. I did see the rack for the XT and it looks good. I would mention it over at XT225.com but I got banned from there when I refused to place an ad there for centerstands.

I was just thinking out loud and trying to help out. My biggest concern with the strut design was the length of the arms. Once they start to bend there will be a loss of strength. A gusset that is an inch or two high that runs along the bottom of the horizontal tube would stiffen it up. A strut somewhere near the mid point of the gusset would provide the additional strength. I don't believe the gusset would need to be more than 1/8" thick. If made from steel there are plenty of inexpensive clamps that could be welded to the plate to clamp to the frame if needed. Like I said, just thinking out loud.

Good luck with the design.

Mike

thanks mike
we are gonna use the brake press to put a stiffener in the middle of the long run down so it wont bow
have to wait and see how much most likely 20 degrees to start , it will make that stainless damn hard to bend

i hope the polisher take the scratches out , stay tuned thanks mike

Sweet mike! Good to hear you'll be jumping into it so soon. Thanks for doing the dirty work for us
I'm glad to test them I like the idea of adding the stiffener in the middle.

Mike,

Looking good. I could try out a set of the scratched ones to save you time.

I recently made the following post in the XRL Owners Sign In thread.

You have certainly proven the Twisted Throttle braces give added support to the bike's subframe. The stock subframe would have certainly failed under those loads and riding conditions.

Attaching a subframe brace to the swingarm would undoubtedly be strongest. However, I believe Patrick Trahan has proven the TT braces greatly strengthen the subframe of the XR650L. Others have reported the CycleRacks rack alone will support large weights without damaging the subframe, and it attaches to the same points as the TT braces.

Personally, I much prefer my ManRacks RotoPax rack to the overly large CycleRacks rack. I also think Mike's modified Spud Struts will greatly reinforce the bike's subframe, yet will be lighter, and probably less expensive than the TT braces. In any event, it's always nice to have choices. Therefore, as soon as I complete the top end rebuild on my engine, I am going to help Mike develop a prototype for a modified Spud Strut.
