I've about $10,000 in, give or take. Too many small mods to go into.

1979 Moto Guzzi 1000SP w/ Hannigan Classic. These pics are a couple of years old, but the rig is the same, and these photos remain my favorites:

I already owned the bike so sidecar $500.00 from barn in Denver;





A little sweat equity;





And for under $2,000.00 including a subframe from Dauntless I ended up with this;





For under $200.00 I built this one Winter in the living room for those long off road trips;

$3000, all in with license plates and a new title. About 80 hours of sweat equity. One nice rig, as long as you don't go over 55

It must be great cruizing down the road on it. Now for the Midget....I've owned Spitfires, Land Rovers, both series and newer, and will never again drop a penny on anything with four wheels from England. They are bigger money pits than any bike from anywhere. Each to his own form of madness, I guess.

I do understand where you're coming from as regards Brit cars. But in my case you have it right: it's definitely madness.

I bought my first one, a Mini, in 1976. That first was then followed by six more Minis, one Hillman Minx, and the Midget. That's some 35 years of Little British Car ownership. And what's even crazier, these things have been my daily drivers the whole time!

I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but it did all seem to start when I watched the 1969 film The Italian Job. Seeing those Minis flying over sidewalks, stairways, and sewers did something to my then 16-year old brain. It just made me laugh, and made me determined to have a Mini.

Trouble is, I'm 52 now, and I'm still laughing...

I bought this brand new in July of 2005 for a tad over $10,000


Starting in August of 2009 I started to turn the above rig into this, cost LOTS of work. Before anyone wigs out, I saved ALL the stock parts and the rig if I should ever want to can be returned to stock condition.


This is a 2008 Gear-Up, it cost me three months of riding it around the country in the summer of 2008, THANKS Ilya, its the best summer job I ever had. Here it is just after being assembled before the trip.

The above rig as it looks now after having traveled over 60,000 kilometers.


In the last 6 years I have only spent about $11,500.00 on my Ural's but have put a LOT of time in to riding them and modifying the one to make it in to a real Dual Sport worthy rig. I can honestly say that in the 50+ years I have been riding the Ural sidecar rigs have given me by far the most fun per dollar invested of ALL the motorcycles I have owned.

I didn't post a photo of the hacked GS as it is now being repainted, when its done I'll edit this post and include it. As I bought the GS new in February of 2001, farkeled the heck out of it and then years later had the hack installed its total cost is way more then a comparable rig can be bought for if you buy it used.

How far back are we allowed to go? In 1992, tired of leaving our six year old behind, my wife and I bought a used Motorvation sidecar sight unseen for $2K. Working from a photocopied manual, we hooked it up to a 1981 Goldwing Interstate that had cost us all of $2495 (before our car arrived on the freight truck, we'd never even seen a sidecar in the flesh before....we live in a small town, you see....).

It took us awhile to get it dialed in, but then we took it and our son up the Alaskan Highway. It was a trip never to be forgotten, and I wish I had the rig back (we foolishly took it apart and sold it off after the boy got too big to want to ride in it anymore....)

As I said, I've never forgotten that trip -- and I'm thinking about another hack.....

$1200.00 Craiglist find Sun baked 1974 BMW R90/6 with Jupiter Sidecar. Side car donor



$500.00 Craigslist find - Crashed and bent 1978 BMW R100S with early modified Earls dual disc front. Engine and front fork donor.
Engine top end was rusted.




$375.00 Neighborhood find - Desert stored and forgotten 1974 R90/6 . Main frame / transmission and wiring donor.




A couple of years of spare time work.



And parts froma couple of other BMW derelict finds....



Rattle can paint job .....(except the tank)



After selling off all the left over parts from the donor bikes I reckon I have around $3000.00 into this monstrosity.
I am proud to say I built this thing by myself from derelict, junk bikes.....in my cargo trailer and front yard.

Wow! Fabulous! The other nice thing is that when it breaks down, no need for a tow truck because the most qualified mechanic in the world for this particular rig is standing right there!

I invested in a used air compressor for $100 and a Harbor Freight HVLP gun for $15 last year. That was money well spent. HVLP makes painting much much easier, and a hell of a lot cheaper than cans of Krylon. Best part, I can get a professional look when I want to spend a little time, and a ratbike look when I want to be done in 30 minutes.

A year later I find myself fully invested in used air tools and ordering a new compressor. Adding air tools to my life was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I purchased this 2003 Goldwing/Escort rig in 2009 for $13,000 from Craig's list. It had 14,000 miles. I flew from Washington to Illinois to pick it up and ride it back home.

Here's my beast:



Bike= 1993 K1100LT, bought in near mint condition last winter for $3800.

Sidecar= sweat equity (buy dead rig, resurrect bike, sell bike, keep hack)

Assembly= about $1900, including transportation costs from a top builder

optional= car tire conversion & tire = $900

Let's call it $6000 for the "needed" and another $1500 for goodies (car tire conversion, more lights, etc)

7000 miles so far this year. Too much fun, 35-40 mpg, and more fun!
