Take it easy the first 2 days. You can't win anything but you can lose a lot.

Im sure Patsy has filled you in on the kit required etc and I have no doubt you will be very well looked after. A good gang of us going, so youll always have someone to ride with / ask questions of.

See you soon chap

Am going for a ride with the DR guys this week, unfortunately can't make it to the trip you are doing as it would have been perfect.

Hopefully I will get a "something we can work with" rating from DR guys rather than the "this really not for you" rating.

I am taking the Toby Younger approach, just get to the finish and be uninjured. (and learn a lot).

One question, do you wear a Leat? I have never ridden in one, seems like a sensible option. And I need to get a new helmet as the tour x is too heavy and a pain to get googles on, was thinking the Klim F4.

Was out in November with Desert Rose and did some of the Tuareg stages - I wore a Klim F4 and it was perfect for the job. 40+ vents on them, so it goes without saying you won't cook in one! The Tour-X is exactly that, a touring helmet and although very good, the F4 is definitely the right tool for what you are about to do.

The Leatt, I had a fair old off in the dunes and wish I had been wearing mine at the time, but stupidly didn't take it with me becuase I couldn't get it in my luggage Get one. For the first hour you will find it a bit odd, but then it just becomes another part of your riding gear.

Enjoy the rally (all of you)

I always wear a Neck brace / Leatt at anything above Enduro speed. It's a no brainer in the desert, especially if you are racing. As for helmets, I have been wearing an Airoh Stelt, lovely and light, but I cook in it as it has hardly any vents. Patsy just ordered me an F4 which i'll collect this week.

Everyone seems to rate them very highly for the desert conditions. I have just replaced my Airoh with an Airoh Patriot, which is a vented version of the Stelt.. for riding enduro, the F4 has some pretty big scoops on which do like to attract branches! So, for me it will be a helmet for each type of riding.

Do yourself a favour and get some decent plastic sunglasses that you can wear in your helmet, when youre in the dunes and the going is slow, youll be greatful for the extra airflow allowed by sunnies!
I used to wear goggles 100% of the time, but it's a tip i picked up from Patsy and Zippy for the stuff where you're not likely to be in alot of dust or the risk of small rocks etc coming flying at you is small.

Enjoy your riding this week, where/when are you going? I might be tempted to come along for a quick blast... been a few months since i was on a bike now, thanks to a very hectic work schedule.

Cheers
Ben

At least one and a half time as many parts :)

Hope to have her back in 1 piece next week. 180 hours on the clock, never looked at the valves, just changed oil in time, thought it would be wise to have her refreshed before the 2012 season. Feedback, all well inside, 3rd and 5th gear could do with replacing to make sure I dont have to open her for another 180hours :)

Another noob question
What colour lenses do people use in the desert for their goggles?
I've been looking at the irridium 1s as they seem the most obvious?
