I tried to make this image replicate the look of an old linen postcard:

Me 'n D have been in southwest Virginia for five and a half years already, yet we're still discovering new adventures right here in our 'hood. I've often wondered what the cool old place up on the hill in Max Meadows was all about, and yesterday was my first visit - quite by chance - to the Old Fort Chiswell Mansion. There was no one there, but I did a lap with the camera, politely peered in a couple of windows, and tried to imagine who built the place, and who owns it now.

I've just finished reading the story from the Roanoke Times from the link above, which led me on an internet journey to find out more about the mansion's current owner, Chris Disibbio. By all accounts he's a way-cool guy - gourmet chef, entrepreneur, body-builder, fitness expert, motivational speaker and mansion owner - and I found this video of Chris particularly heart warming:

Chris gives tours of his home each weekend during the summer season. I'm very much looking forward to taking Denise there for a photo-walk and to meet Chris for the first time. What a remarkable world we live in. So many photo opportunities, so little time...

You need to get there some time when they are doing tours. It's been about 3 years since I was there but Chris was living in it but you got to tour the entire place.there are things you won't see at any other historical site. He has a set of rings attached to the huge old rafters of the attack, and they take you down to the basement to see the area where the slaves were punished (stocks etc) I've yet to eat at his place in Bluefield.

Bump...

Where ya been all weekend Ferris?

Bobw, damn good to meet you. I did get at least one shot of the Jack but couldn't find you when I did. Thanks for the travelin' goodies. Hope we didn't offend you too bad... you know that means you exceeded your welcome and were accepted.

Welcome to the family.

JB2,

it was an honor and great time. "1 of everything" sure works well and I look forward to future rides and raising a glass (or two....)

I'll add a couple of photos soon,.
