After taking my sweat-soaked portrait at the Bob White Covered Bridge (which involved repeated sprints from camera to bike to beat the ten-second self-timer...) I humped back toward the Blue Ridge via Belcher Mountain Road, dirt so steep that several years ago, when me 'n my buddy Carlos rode it for the first time - downhill - neither of us were at all convinced that a streetbike could actually climb up the road onnaconna the grade and all. Easy peasy it turned out to be, though (sorta...), and by and by I took a quiet little gravel side road near the top of Belcher, which led to a quieter little dirt two-track, which eventually led to a scenic little grassy cul-de-sac, basically in the vicinity of Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Pretty place it was, and I had it all to myself. I even took a quick cat-nap in the shade of a tree. Climbing out of my little wilderness retreat after my nap required holding a good line, but the RK is nothing if not steady as she goes.

The V-Strom was a pretty nice machine, traded my VFR for it, put ten or 12 thousand miles on the 'Strom, rode it around the country when I bought it, one of the most comfortable riding positions and seat of any bike I've ever owned. Never really loved it, though, and traded it for an FJR, which I later traded for the Road King. The RK suits me well; it's pretty much just a big, heavy UAM: Universal American Motorcycle, and does OK off-road and in the twisties. Besides, it's almost paid for.

Most people don't know how good you are on your RK.That is a tough road,but a great shortcut from Meadows of Dan to Tuggles Gap.Once again great pics.If you see Prior,I have some info for his trip to Hatteras.I just need his snailmail addy.
