A little RR yard

Happened across this little depot Sunday... I know you like trains so I took the liberty of putting up some pics in your thread. Hope that's o.k..

I like the reflection of the American flag in the windshield.

Cool, thanks for sharing! I just did some Googling on the Aberdeen, Carolina and Western RR - were these photos taken in Star, NC??

Posting my quick snapshots with FF's art sure does make me want to take better shots .... or at least hold the camera level!

I love the enhanced locomotive shot above!

Dave, thanks a million! I appreciate positive feedback, but coming from you, a gifted photographer in your own right, makes it extra-special. I enjoy the "hunt" of photography when I ride, particularly when I'm out just wandering around (which I do a lot up here in the mountains), but also very much enjoy editing a day's pix after the fact, hoping for the occasional pearl or two. Your HDR thread here on ADV has been inspiring, and much of what I've posted of late has been post-processed this way, trying to add that little extra pop and sizzle (or, in some cases, trying to rescue an otherwise failed photograph). In any event, much appreciated, amigo. Thanks for taking the time to post-up, and for following along. :-)

Best,
Ferris

Well heck, looks like I need to get a check in the mail to you, too!

Since you host your pix on SmugMug, here's a "free" secret for you: Open up a pic in one of your galleries, then click Tools > This Photo - More > Edit with PicMonkey.

Let the photo load (it may take a bit, depending on file size and your internet connection speed), and then you'll have a virtually unlimited number of post-processing tools at your disposal to tweak your photo, from mild to wild.

When you're done, click Save > Save New Copy (so it won't overwrite your original image), and it'll save your farkled photo back to the gallery it just came from.

Your loco photo above would have come out much better if I had started with your original file instead of lifting the smaller (data-wise) photo from your post. Give it a try. PicMonkey comes with your SmugMug subscription, and it can be a lot of fun (or very frustrating...) trying to convert a snapshot into art. :-)

For example, here's an original image from our ride down to Franklin, NC over Memorial Day weekend:

Decent enough, but kinda lacked the "pop" I was looking for (not surprising, since I was holding the camera pretty much in my lap and shooting blind). Here's the same image with a little nitrous tossed in the mix:

That's more like it, and looks a lot more like what my eyes were actually seeing on the Parkway that afternoon. However, that overlook coming up on the left sure distracts from the poetry of the photo, in my opinion, so let's see what the Clone tool in PicMonkey can do about that:

Voila!

Have fun, amigo. Your photos are great just as they are. Sometime it's fun to get in a monkey around with 'em, however, just to see what else might be hiding in the 0's and 1's.

Best,
Ferris

Another quick example of post-processing magic:

No pop, and all the signs absolutely ruin an otherwise decent photo. Let's do something about it:

This version is a LOT more fun!!!!!!!

Great pictures and narration. Thanks for the time and work to share this area with us that don't get there too often. ;-) Totally understand the way and places you take the UAM to. One of the bikes I learned to ride on was a '47 FLH , tank shift, all gravel roads back then. Also had a DL1000 for about 14 months and 16,000 miles. Just to tall and never did like the way the engine pulled below 3500 rpm.

Bold???
Yes,,, I suppose that's one way to describe it!!!!
Not timid by any means!!!
But he certainly makes it work!!!!!

And Ferris,,,, I see you're still sending checks out. Just wanted to let you know I'm still waiting on mine! Yea, Yea, I know,,, it's in the mail!

'Nother question or thought--- so many of your pics show old buildings and land that looks 'unused'. And a lot of the land looks like it could be farmed in some way or another and put to use. So, why isn't it,,, who owns land and just lets it set idle? I know a lot of your pics are on the BRP, so that answers it about that land. But the others? Always wondered about that when I've been in VA and WVA. Just curious,,any thoughts?
Here in PA,,, seems most land is farmed, forested or built upon. We don't have the areas you do that's just left alone with minimal maintenance.
