You gotta remove that sticker near the ignition telling you not to exceed 100mph before it'll allow you to go higher.

I've done a buch of what I wall "useable top speed tests". Just means I'm not tucking, going downhill and I stop counting if it's been more 3 seconds since my large screen gps has climbed 1 full digit. (By that same standard my KLX250 ((pre 351)) would top at about 66 mph but in 10 minutes might be up to 78 ((more than 20% faster)) 5 full minutes later keeping it pegged at full throttle. The 690 is not going to get another 20% if you keep it pegged at full throttle - it'll only get an appointment for an overhaul if you do that ).

Here's my results:

- first my 08 speedo was the closest to my Garmin 60CSx I've ever had; it was about 2% optimistic whereas my KLX250's speedo is about 10% optimistic.
- I have 4 numbers over the same 3 miles of interstate. 2 in each direction and 1 set at mid day and 1 set in later evening.
Midday #'s were 102mph north and 98 mph heading south on the same section.
Evening #'s were 106mph and 103 mph.

That was with stock gearing and 50% worn MT21's; I weigh about 210 with gear.

FWIW on my 3X weaker KLX250 here in Malayisa I notice massive differences in top speed between hot midday and the fastest time of the day being first light at 6:30 am (sunrise is always around 7:20 am here).
I guess that makes sense cuz if I'm running or riding bicycle I too am fastest at about 6:30 am

Hoping back and forth between the 690 and KLX250 my speedo climbs at about the exact same rate between the 2. Just that the KLX is
1. 10 % opptimistic and
2. It in km where my 690 is in mph

By the numbers I could always throw just a tad more heat with my fastball than Randy Johnsten... if you recorded mine in km/hr and his in mph.

KTM 690 VS Jetwash

Does anyone else have a 690 that has issues with jetwashes. It has been washed twice and twice the same symptoms. After the jetwash it starts fine and seems fine but after about 5 mins the water must seep somewhere and it has issues idling. Engine just cuts. Sometimes it restarts but today it suffered really badly. After a decent run, struggling to keep it running at lights, it sorts itself out. Any ideas where to look? I rode it through water the other day and it was fine, but the water from the jetwash must get somewhere it doesnt like? Anyone manage to solve this?

Hmmn, that is a possibility, it has the RR foam filter. I am thinking of trying to construct a carbon fibre cover for it to dampen the noise and side benefit to keep the water out!

Anyone interested in a brand new rear wheel for a 690? It's a RAD wheel with a silver Excel rim in a 2.5 width. The stock KTM sprocket carrier slides right into the RAD hub. PM me if anyone is interested. I also have a matching front rim in a 2.15 width. PM me for details.

Dazed,

My spark plug cap had a teared rubber boot and also died after washing (or not start at all), replaced, greased a bit, and no more issue's.

Rad protection

Seen some rad info on page 49 after a radiator search and was wondering if anybody have made use of the RR radiator protectors, and your comments please. They might not be the only ones manufacturing some sort of rad protection.

Then again, it depends how hard you come off I guess.

Thanks

Which model 690 do you have?

This one fits like the RR model and is a bit cheaper.

Thanks, I've seen that one on a KTM dealer site as power parts 108, the RR one is cheaper at 99, in the UK that is of course. That might be the only two available.

Ah, you aren't in the US... The KTM guard is $30 cheaper here than the RR guard.

There is a tubular type of guard if you have the "E" model. It won't fit the "R".

Cracked Airbox

Came back after a 400km desert and mountain jaunt. Managed to kick some XR butt

Checked the air filter. Found a long crack in the bottom of the airbox. Looks like it is a casting flaw. Doesn't let in dust yet. Anybody heard of this issue before?
