My thoughts are isn't this what led to the Rise of the Machines? Crankenstein's monster bike gets so improved that it evolves to the point of self awareness--then no longer listen's to what crankshaft asks it and becomes the Berminator model 2009. If anyone can contact Sarah Connor, please warn her what is coming.

Custom Wiring Harnesses.

Hey crankshaft,

I read through your build thread where you actualy followed through on your threats to have an improved custom wiring harness done (bravo! ). Then your wiring guy went out of business. Are you willing to tell us the approximate cost of getting the custom wiring harness done? If someone had the jigs all set up could it be done at a discount?

Methinks (hi SethS) that with all the electrical issues, that a well thought out semi-custom military grade wiring harness would be a huge hit with 690 owners wanting to build up an improved bike for long distance/remote use.

With the cornucopia of 690 farkles and upgrades out there why have none of the big vendors sub contracted out to a shop that do this sort of thing? With all the engineers on this thread, they could receive 101 suggestions on the optimum build. I'm thinking stuff like eliminate the side stand switch, emissions stuff; have options for LED blinker relays wired in, power distribution blocks behind the headlight for people that wanted to run a bunch of electronic gizmos. Battery tender lead build in. etc. etc.

It seems to me the majority of reliability issues and frustrations riders have with the bike is due to poor grounds, loose or wet connections, and wires that break due to chafing from thin insulation and poor routing or breaks due to stretching tight connections. Is anyone a buddy with a wiring shop that can go put a bug in their ear? If you got a ballpark price on a custom harness from them and mentioned it here, they could easily start up a vendor's thread to see what the serious interest was and have a discusion on an initial run of harnesses. I'm thinking that the new harness would be one of the best upgrades you could do for a 690.

This may be the reason ...

Stopped by your build thread - some great ideas
in there - I have one of our 690's torn down to the
frame, and sitting on the fence about doing some
of the things you did:

- moving battery to the front
- moving ECU/relays, etc up under the RR fairing
- cutting out most of the stock BS wiring harness
- moving filter and airbox higher up front
- dropping the seat down an inch or so (GF is shorter...)
- building shorter, stronger, and wider CF seat pan
and storage under seat

Also looking at modding the rad (shorten the upper
hose mount and run that hose to the middle of rad,
then down to engine) looks like a 2nd fan will fit fine
even with stock rad - I am fabbing a better CF shroud
and fan mount

Questions:

How is the 8 cell Antigravity battery holding up ?

Are you using the bike just for racing, or any touring ?

What grade of wire did you use - I just ordered some
hi-temp TXL wire to test... have not looked into the
teflon stuff...

Which version of the Sumitomo's are the connectors
you used ?

Was considering the dirt tricks fan, but not sure of the
longevity/reliability - anyone using one ??

My project looks tame compared to the custom FI fab !!!

Some great mad science work - I'm diggin it !!

Is military-grade just a generic expression or are there criteria that actually qualify a harness as such? I am going to be re-building mine and would be interested in how to beef it up.

Thanks

If you are looking for some good ideas, read through crankshaft's build thread here... http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=823066

Awhile back after reading that thread I was goggling up custom wiring harness makers, and one that stuck in my mind was one that offered up mil-spec custom harnesses--so the specs for that must be out there. No idea what they are off hand but I imagine certain criteria of durability and waterproofness must be met. That must have been rattling around in my brain when I wrote the post above. From the description on that website I was left with the impression I would need a Dept. of Defense type budget to afford their products.

If a 690 evolves to the point of self awareness I suspect it would just become a nagging bitch complaining about all of its aches and pains.

Is anybody running the FMF Header? How's the leg clearance?
How's the power?
Did you remap?

I have the Q-4 Muffler now.
I have a line a FMF Header for a good price. Thinking of getting it.

I have only read anecdotal reviews on the FMF header and they read something to the effect of: keep your money no better than stock. Have not seen any numbers to back up this heresay.

I running just the FMF Apex slip-on (no restrictor) and was considering their header until I installed the Vortex ECU. It makes so much power now it's almost freakin' scary. I'm not sure the header would add as much bang for the buck.

More then one have had weld failures including mine. FMF will fix it, but still, they should weld the damn things right to begin with.

Funny that you mention weld issues. My Q-4 needs the rear shield bracket rewelded. It looks like absolutely no penetration on the bracket itself. Both tabs. I had to bailing wire the shield just before LAB2V.
I have a friend who has access to a good stainless welder. It will be done right.
