My pics from the Wilson Mesa Single Track...
![]() Weave waiting for the next bike to come by for a photo ![]() and here's Paddle! ![]() And Peaches: ![]() and more Peaches: ![]() ![]() EBW coming up the trail ![]() David on the trail ![]() The KLR ready for more single track! ![]() When I tried to flag Supah down and tell him his tire was going flat, he looked at me like it was my fault. We got the tire off and they were about to throw a new tube in when EBW said, "Don't you think you should look in the tire?" and out comes a 3 inch nail with no head that was all the way inside the tire and rolling around! ![]() Some of the views were spectacular! Don't see these on the tour bus pavement tour! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Supah fighting the hill climb ![]() Weave making it look easy ![]() ![]() ![]() EBW getting up the hill ![]() ![]() I guess this is the BROWN BEAR to go with DQ's Black Bear story?!?! ![]() ![]()

Monday, September 5th
Today was a day I had waited a year for. Last year while running Imogene, the clutch went out on my DRZ and I didn't quite make it to the top of the pass. The plan for last year was to also ride Black Bear Pass the following morning. Obviously that didn't happen either. By the time I got my clutch fixed it was time to head to Moab. This year would be a better story. All of the bikes were running good and everyone was up for the challenge. None of us had ridden Black Bear before. We had all seen countless videos and pictures but we all know that pics and video just don't do justice to a road like this. We left Ouray about 9:00 and headed for the start of Black Bear. When we arrived we found the trail closed until 10am because of a waterline repair. We sat around for the next 45 minutes with growing anticipation. ![]() ![]() ![]() At 10:00 we were like runners leaving the starting blocks. ![]() ![]() This is an optional line that I took. No one else followed me. ![]() We quickly made our way to the top of the pass and the start of the fun downhill section. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We started heading down anticipating the upcoming steps. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyone care to swing? Not this fat boy! ![]() ![]() The warm-up to the actual steps. ![]() ![]() Paddle decided to do some push-ups? ![]() I should mention that this incident did something to the battery and it was dead from here on out. He would need to bump start it or jump start for the rest of the trail. However, this wouldn't be the last of his problems. While I was waiting on the rest of the guys, the scenery suddenly changed! ![]() ![]() ![]() Then the tour bus arrived. I think they were having fun. ![]() I was first down the steps then ran back up to take pics and assist if needed. Running uphill at that altitude is tough on us fat boys. I finally made it though. Evil ![]() Peaches ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() BW ![]() ![]() ![]() Supah ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know what happened to the rest of my pics of the steps.? Someone else will have to fill them in. I should note though that Paddle dropped his bike and broke the hand guard and the clutch lever to go along with his dead battery. First look at the switchbacks ahead. ![]() The switchbacks were fun! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bridal Veil Falls ![]() We made it to the bottom and had lunch in Telluride.

My pics from Black Bear Day, which by no means endorses the school that recently chose the Black Bear as their mascot...
![]() Waiting at the start: ![]() Just enough time to get psyched up ![]() Going up the back side was a great ride ![]() Supah doing his one legged riding tricks... ![]() No one could ever figure out how to park in an orderly fashion at the pass signs... ![]() Some left over snow ![]() Upper switchbacks ![]() My first glimpse of Telluride ![]() Weave was wishing the state of Colorado would seperate their rocks by sizes to make them easier to navigate across... ![]() ![]() EBW getting pics of Telluride ![]() The "road" ![]() Weave and others walked down to watch a Jeep disappear down the steps and scout out our line ![]() The waterfall at the top... ![]() DQ, our fearless leader, chooses to go first... ![]() ![]() EBW doing the steps ![]() We finally got every down. The steps are just around that corner going back up hill... ![]() ![]() Bridal Veil Falls with Supah riding in ![]() ![]() A view of the Black Bear Pass switchbacks from the road going up Imogene on the side of Telluride ![]() Another view of Telluride from the road up Imogene ![]() Peaches... ![]()

After Black Bear and lunch, we decided to run across Imogene. Since Paddle's bike was having issues, he and Weave decided to take the highway back to Ouray.
The rest of us headed up the pass. Black Bear switchbacks, from Imogene. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Peaches having an equipment malfunction. ![]() Tomboy ![]() ![]() ![]() Top of the Pass ![]() ![]() Some handsome fellow that was hanging around ![]() ![]() ![]() The SUV on the right of the pic had a pretty bad crash. The vehicle rolled at least once. ![]() I thought it would be inappropriate to stop near the scene and take close up pictures. There were a couple of people strapped to back boards and emergency personnel were everywhere. ![]() ![]() ![]() Imogene seemed much easier this year. I'm not sure if the terrain has changed, or if it's the difference in the bikes. It's a great pass though, very scenic, with a few challenging spots. Tomorrow we take an easy but very scenic ride, then head for MOAB.

Day 3: Wilson Mesa Trail
Some pics of the various roads leading up to, away and on Wilson Mesa Trail:
Weave: ![]() ![]() EBW: ![]() ![]() BW: ![]() Weave again with the camera; I hope you don't lose that damn thing: ![]() Looking good EBW: ![]() Ooofff; you know we had showers at the hotel: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I think Paddle had a good day!: ![]() Wilson Mesa Trail was tough, but by the end of the day, we all agreed that it was a ton of fun. Don't go with a big bike unless you have some friends with you! |

We waited on a couple of jeeps and a pathfinder to move through. They were pretty quick though.
