Thank you for your great ride reports. I recently sold my KTM 525 Dual Sport bike and purchased a little Yamaha XT250 which is much more suitable for the kind of riding I want to do here in St George. I'm guessing your dad and I are about the same age, what a blessing to be able to share riding with him. If you ever need a riding partner I'd love to try and ride with you.

Ride on Tuesday, May 1st?

Hi Gregg,

My schedule is wide open for next Tuesday, May 1st from 10 am onwards. Would this work for you?

Weather should be fine. Where'd you like to go? Any ideas? Ride index on page 1. Other options as well.

Great lookin' Yamaha XT250. Tough, "go-anywhere" versatile bikes. Hope you are enjoying it.

If I remember, you are a SunRiver guy. If Tuesday, 5/1 doesn't work, suggest a different day next week. Usually I can adjust my schedule around.

Any other local inmates want to get in on this???

Throw a message up here if you're interested, even if Tuesday, 5/1, doesn't work. We'll figure out some additional times/rides.

Tuesday would be good for a reasonably short day. I'm flying to St Louis the next day for a week but I'd love to sneak a ride in before I go. Please drop me an email so I have yours too and I'll send you my cell number. Yes I'm in SunRiver but I haven't ridden the area much as I just got the XT
Do you know Jerry Counts of Countdown Dual Sport Adventure rides. He is a long time friend and he would like to email you about rides in Southern Utah. He is the one who sent me the link to your posts. He asked me to connect him to you if I could.
Here is what he sent me, My email is tgregg6721@yahoo.com

Let me know if you contact him. Looks like he does not use GPS. I sent PM asking if he knows about GWT.

Open Invite: Ride on Tuesday, May 1st

Hi Gregg -- PM sent.

Looks like a ride on Tuesday, May 1st, starting ~10 am. Couple of hours??

Any local inmates welcome to join. Likely some type of basic dirt, smaller dual sport bikes, but any non-road bike would work. Possible areas: end of Navajo Drive in Bloomington (lots of options), short excursion on AZ strip (River Road exit), ???

Shout out if interested but Tuesday, May 1st is a "no go" -- Can do a ride soon on a weekend in addition. Road rides -- Kolob Reservoir, Springdale, etc. -- also in future for non-dirt riders.

Thanks for checkin' in.

Thanks, Inmates!

PMs sent.

Open invite for ride: Tuesday, May 1st, starting 10 am. Basic dirt, perhaps leaving from end of Navajo Drive in Bloomington. Other possible options: short loop on AZ Strip or Enterprise Reservoir area. We'll be riding smaller dual sport motos. Any dual sport bike would be fine.

Post up or PM me if interested.

Also if Tuesday, May 1st, isn't available, but interested, let me know. We can organize a weekend day or other weekday in May. For inmates who prefer "no dirt" we can also organize a road ride -- Kolob Reservoir, Springdale, etc.

Exploring between Veyo & Central, west of Highway 18

Out messing about a few nights ago. Found myself on the TW200 in Veyo. Locals will easily recognize the gas station.

Just west of Veyo, at the bottom of "the wall" is the sharp turn and the intersection of two dirt roads. One goes to Enterprise Reservoir (the Veyo Shoal Rd) -- see post #56 and #182. The other is marked "No Outlet." Have to see where this goes . . .

Eventually you come to this. Power station by Central. Pine Valley Mountain in background.

Here's the roadside map of Central.

Some stuff in between. This old machine is close so the start of the ride.

Quite a lot of old farm equipment. Small valleys close to the Santa Clara River.

Old farm guys would know exactly what this equipment was for. I have some ideas . . . would be interesting to see it in operation.

Main route of travel followed pipeline and powerline road.

Diverted off to follow a few rough double tracks. Gained some elevation. Thinking about routes to Enterprise. Up higher near a broken down water catchment system.

Back near the powerlines.

More exploring. Up high again on double track.

Back tire shot with flower.

Near one the spots where I turned around and headed back down to the powerline road. This pic is west of Central with Pine Valley Mountain in background. Lots of rough double track up in this area. Very lightly used. Warrants a bit more exploration.

Local inmate ride on Tuesday, May 1st. Details above. PM me if interested. Ride safe!

I am in for sure for Tuesday. The Bloomington start sounds good to me. I'll give you a call today to firm up meeting place.

Always a pleasure to view your rides, it feels a little like I get to go along.
It also warms my heart to see you and your dad enjoying the land and each other's company. Thanks for sharing.

A good friend will take you trail riding, an ADV friend will double back and say, "how did you get down there?"

Zion: Kolob Canyons

Zion National Park has a second lesser know section -- Kolob Canyons. The access is immediately off of I-15. Perhaps the easiest of all National Parks to access. The park has one road which quickly (within 5 miles) takes you to fantastic red cliff. 30 minutes north of St. George, 15 minutes south from Cedar City.

A few pics:

Same "red" asphalt as the main part of Zion National Park. Almost no traffic!

Main cliffs face west, best in late afternoon light.

Local inmate ride of Tuesday, May 1st, 10 am. All welcome. Dual sport bikes from Navajo Drive in Bloomington. Meet at gas station in front of Walmart. PM me for more details if interested.

I clicked on that link about the Mountain Meadows Massacre (I had never heard of it before). And got lost in the survivors accounts. Horrific.

Matt and I have only done a little riding in UT (moab, and the parts that are on the TAT - black dragon, eagle canyon, near monticello UT, etc.).
We really need to get out there and see more!

Read this: "Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows" by Will Bagley

I am sure you can get it from the library. Pretty horrible stuff for sure! That whole deal with blood atonement is pretty hard core.

I just googled "blood atonement." Yikes.
Thank you for the recommendation, but I don't think I want any more details.
the survivor accounts were more than enough for me!

Three National Parks: Cedar Breaks, Bryce & Zion

Visited three National Parks on Saturday. Good day. About 300 miles. Cedar Breaks is a National Monument, but close enough. A few pics. More to follow. Also went by Kodachrome Basin State Park.

Cedar Breaks is about 10,000 ft. Still kind of wintery. The road through the park is still closed (snow), but you can access one view point.

Bryce Canyon National Park. Vulcan 900 is great for chewing up road miles.

Land of Hoodoos.

More Hoodoos.

Zion National Park.

Virgin River and the Watchman in late afternoon.
