15 days in the South East.

I began planning this trip back when I was unemployed and had originally planned taking two months, and seeing how far I could make it with however much money I had at that point. Sounds like fun right? Two months around the US! I could see a lot in that time. Well, the plan changed when I got a job selling cars, apparently the maximum a person can take off in their first year is a month. Not too much of a problem except now I had a time restraint. One month traveling the US! Still sounds good, until I learned that part timers could only take 15 days off without having to reapply for their job... so, 15 days, traveling the south east! I could settle for that.

Planned a route 2 days before my scheduled leave date
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...1,9.887695&z=7

A little preparation, and lots of money spent on parts getting an '05 DR650 in a touring trim. Dirt bagz and a topbox for luggage, a bunch of aftermarket parts, and a can of black Krylon

For gear, AFX dual sport helmet, motocross roost and arm guards, feildsheer pants, and some thor boots and ONE pair of socks long enough for the boots.

I decided to give myself a limit of $1,000 for the trip. And when I say limit, I mean I spent all my money on parts and other crap until I was sitting on only my vacation money.

Packed and ready to go, That is my mom next to my bike, and my dad getting ready to escort me for the first 50 miles or so on his '89 TransAlp

Split up with him once I hit 211 and now solo and mountain bound.

Paid $10 and continued on Skyline drive.

Having fun so far!

Getting a little late. time to come off the mountain and set up camp.

Day 1 was pretty uneventful, a few problems with my aftermarket speedo but nothing too bad.

This'll be good. Especially after you left the little teaser photo on the other NOVA weekends thread. Like that bike setup, nicely done.

Day 2

Woke up in the tent after a pretty rough night. It had rained and now everything in the tent was damp. Not a great start to the trip, but I had a great leg of the journey to complete. Finishing the Blue Ridge Parkway and head into North Carolina.

Took off around 9AM and I immediately noticed a light fog

Getting worse.

Worse

Finally it was like driving 150 miles in a cloud. Raining on and off, it was around 60 degrees and it felt like 30.

I was miserable. Every pull off I came to was filled with motorcyclists who where considering turning back and getting off the mountain. I considered coming off the Parkway and just trying to get into NC as quick as possible but I figured that if I backed off when it got bad like this, I could end up regretting it.

To add to my frustration, my speedometer had stopped working. It registered the tach and engine temp, but no speed. The whole unit followed suite and worked only 50% of the time.

As soon as I crossed into North Carolina, I went to the nearest town called Dobson to get my bearings and figure out where I was going to stay for the night.

Turns out, Winston Salem has a Motel 6 for $30 a night

Stopped by the visitors center to see if anything cool was happening in the area.

Turns out that there is pretty much nothing to do for a guy who's too old for kiddie shit, but too young to drink.

Got to the motel room, and brought everything inside

Even the bike

Got dressed in some dry clothes, and headed out to the nearest movie theater to see "The Hangover". Pretty good movie and I needed the laughs.

On the way back to the hotel room, I noticed that my handle bars where coming loose

Pulled over, broke out the tool kit and got to work tightening the nuts that hold the bar mounts to the triple clamps. Pretty scary to find them really loose.

The silver nut in the center of the pick is what came loose.

Enough excitement for today. Back to the motel 6.
