I keep reading that, you must be a rice rocket owner? Most of my bikes limit revs to 7k-8k, I have a Bandit that revs to 12k and it's fun for awhile...all day rowing through the gears gets a little old though.

On a modern 1000cc sportbike this is not necessary. On my 2008 CBR1000RR I can put the thing in 6th and ride all day (I could put it in 3rd and do the same, for that matter). Here are torque and hp charts for the 2008 big four 1000cc sportbikes, power everywhere:

If my math is right, the NC700x is doing 70mph @ 3730 rpm. That is very slow (efficient!) at this displacement. For a closer comparison, the DL650 does 70mph @ ~5200 rpm. I shouldn't have said redline. More-so looking at how high the engine gets spun up. Of course I could be completely wrong - it could purr like a 2-cycle kitten after mealtime. janeuner screwed with this post 05-10-2012 at 10:48 AM Reason: Add references to math. |

I wish I had the self control for a modern sportbike, but the man already mentions jail when I get pulled over. I have to be a very good 'boy for three years straight, any more points and I might not have a job.
![]() Right, right...the nice thing about Honda giving it a chain drive is that we can play with gearing for very little cash. |

I've just received one for a review bike.
Must say that Im really disappointed with it. I've ridden mopeds that excite me more. There is nothing fancy about it. Its just a thing, with 2 wheels and an engine. I guess in a green world where everybody is after fuel economy it makes sort of sense. Biggest downer is when you shift through the gears, it almost feels like you are short shifting every time (not really) because of the low rev limit. I've hit it 3 times without meaning to. Man is it slow. 0-100mph takes 2 weeks. I think a f650gs is way faster! But it does look cool. Cant wait for the Cross-tourer.... At least it will wheelie

for those that have ridden it ... how bad is it ?
Compared to say a 02 Nighthawk 750 or a DRZ 400s?? both of them are slow but still a blast to ride.

Seriously though... it has no where near any thrill factor like the DRZ. Dont know the nighthawk, but im guessing it revs past 6k rpm and can wheelie. Im stuck with the 700X till after the weekend. Ill have to see if I change my tune. (2 up riding the bike struggled to see over 140kph)

You could still compare it to, aside from the looks, a plain vanilla toaster like appliance commuter shuttle, I suppose.

So what didn't you like about the new NC700?

The DRz is 24 horse and i thought the NC700X was 54 ... total bummer if it is a slug. I want the upright seating position of the DRz but with a better seat for commuting.

Perhaps you are right. I think in current times with the likes of the bigger monster dirt bikes the NC700 is a complete disappointment. However, it has sort of grown on me, if you can live with the power and short shifting. I had it on a bit of farm dirt road and its surprisingly stable. The X's (adventure model) suspension is still dialed in for the road and its just a marketing gimmick. So far I've done 100miles an there is about 2 bars left in the tank. I was not riding it with fuel consumption in mind. I did see 186kph, flat out ducking behind the screen. 150kph seems to be an easy cruising speed an the bike feels comfortable there. 2 up is a different ball game. You will see 140-145kph flat out in top gear, more if you pin it in 5th, but it should really fall back to 140kph. For a single purpose bike (commuting) the bike makes sense. High mpg, low stress motor with good brakes and enough midrange poke. Its just not a fun bike and does not speak to me, like say a 700 Transalp or the 650XRL. Will I buy it? No, Id rather buy a 700 alp or a 650L if on a budget.
