Pissed NX650 doesnīt start!

Hi guys!

Need some assistance at my monsterīs garage...

Iīve a 97 NX 650 that iīm transforming that doesnīt start...

The bike as a 18 lt tank from a KTM with all the conections working fine.

The bike sometimes starts, works for a minute or so and stops... I try again but no go.

It as a full tank. (NX doesnīt have pump...) And when i lean the bike to the left she does leak gas. So the gas does reach the carb...
New spark plug. And has she sometimes starts, it has spark...
New air filter.
New batery.

Any sugestions?

Yup.may be the CDI..flip it over and wack it with a screwdriver handle all over the back......if it starts go to Thumpertalk and read my repair..

Spud put one up here on ADVrider ...showing the procedure....after reading some of mine posts at TT......then i decided to get off my butt and finally put up that thread showing the repair.......the mod thought it should be "stickied"...at the top of the forum page.which is sweet......now i can find and link it easier now.....

Kinda funny......i was too lazy to put up that thread for years,as it took a few days to get pics together,and write/edit..........and it ends up it`s saving me more time after putting it up.........as i don`t have to look for past threads now...........just copy/paste sweeeeeeetttttt..gives me more time for beer

Morning, guys!

I test de CDI. Rap sharply with the screw driver at the back of the CDI. Mounted back, it does make noise, but still... no go!

Any more sugestions?

Pull the plug,ground it to the head,see if you have fire while crankin it....lookin for nice blue spark,constant........if not we`ll go from there..

The engine keep rev but doenīt start. It does start for a second or so but then dies...

I kept trying but the only thing i got was a big BUUUUUUUUM when the gas exploded in the exaust

Got the entire neighborhood on their toes!

Usually that indicates the valves are out of adjustment...too tight,causing loss of compression.....check your valve adjustment.......it`ll fire back through the intake.also check to see if the carb boots are on tight on the carb,back firing will blow the carb off the boots sometimes..

Also, try it in the 'Prime' position- that would indicate your vacc line is compromised.

The NX250 guys can troubleshoot a CDI without removing it or any other parts off the bike and I wonder if you 650 guys can't too..

If the tach jumps when you try and start it, the CDI's good.

If the tach doesn't move as the engine's being turned over, it's bad...

Do you use choke?
Backfiring from exhaust is normal when cranking and cranking and cranking with no results.
Check valve clearances as suggested. Check if the mixture screw is in standard position (2 turns out for '97 italian model). Check if choke line is working.
Did you mess with engine? Maybe it's improper cam chain setting? Sometimes, especially when it's already loose, it can skip one or two teeth and it's hard to start but i runs fine with 1 skipped tooth , but with 2 skipped teeth it runs only to 4k rpm's but no further
To start those we used many techniques involved turning throttle, increasing idle screw (try this), choke and no choke and all together

Well... And the winner is...: The CDI!

Itīs working now, got a component burned...

I will try to improve the box to make sure that the contact problem doenīt happen again.

I will share the photos as soon as itīs over!
