Good to see another Dommie out there doing it. They may be cheap but not nasty.

Nice write up. I hope you didn't choke at the price of gas at National Park.

The day started with a light frost & sunrise over Ruapehu:

We set off down Fishers track then some backroads & some long cuts through a few hill country farms:

After some more meandering through the hills we arrived at some sort of farm/museum/biker bar in the middle of nowhere:

...so we had a beer...

Then it was off down the twisty delights of hwy 43 to the Whangamomona Pub for a very convivial evening.

Cheers John & co for a great ride!
Clint

Dominator to the rescue!

Nice pics and words Clint!

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement...and for the Dominator fans, it is nice to know others feel the same way I do about them. I always wanted one after I saw them do a south american camel trophy challenge. I only recently got back into adventure riding, so thats what I went looking for. The smiles versus cost ratio is pretty damn high!
Check these hard men out if you haven't seen it!

If any of the lost guys have pics of Fishers track please add them...I was videoing...(not much of a multi tasker lol)

Video two...

Here is my video from the saturday ride....enjoy. (I did)

I had to redo this with another soundtrack after the copyright police made the first one mute, so I lost the background noises which usualy I run 50/50 with the soundtrack, so please mentally insert laughing hard out at Stretch getting filled in by the 640 unbeknowns to the rider just trying to get out of a ditch...the look on his face had me and Ricky in stitches...I nearly fell over laughing!

Sorry if this is a bit disjointed, but it is great that everyone adds their pics and thoughts as they join in...(if you followed Pulp Fiction this should be easy!)

Tyre change....

As mentioned before - the 950SE was conspicuos by it's absence at a farm gate I was on, so I (eventually) backtracked and this is what I found...

Halfway through the process I remembered to take some pics to document the job....

We don't need no steeenking jack....

I know it looks like Dave did it all...but honest it was a joint effort! I even got my skinny hand in and relocated the valve in the hole in the rim!

Just as we had the tyre back on and pumped up our leader Johnny turned up to help finish it off, and said for me to take the rest of the guys up to the top where the forestry ends and wait. (Little did I know but there was a super slippery Papa clay crossing before I could rejoin the gang.)

Talk about slippery when wet!!!

Papa clay is a peculiar grey clay, looking like a mix of clay and slate like rock. When it is dry it looks like hard slate (but it's not) and when wet it is so damn slippery you can barely stand on it! When I got to the crossing with all the guys gathered round, more than half with cameras out, I just thought I would avoid the wet line, zip accross the small creek and hit the bank and be up in a flash.......epic fail! I aimed for the high point, slipped into the low point and there I stayed until enough horsepower was assembled to roll me out. I don't have a pic of me crossing it, but judging by the ammount of cameras out I know some are lurking out there!

Eventually everyone assembled on the far side and I led the chase up a neat winding track climbing between Pine plantations...from Johnny's earlier pics you can see evidence of their growth over the years. Eventually we arrived and then waited, and waited, then waited some more - obviously leaving the crossing unmanned with a 990 and 950 to come was not the smartest move in retrospect, but eventually we all assembled at the top.

Up a farm trail to get a perspective pic.....

View from the top...

Long way down versus the shortcut down (dry weather only - steeper than it looks!)...

Eager for action....

Me too!

If the road was that conspicuos...why did it even need a name?

Lunch on top of the world....

(Ok, maybe just on top of that farm)....we had lunch where the top dressing planes stored their fertiliser - supplemented by Johnny cracking out the sardines smoked oysters and soft centred jelly treats....

Parking on the airstrip....

Bikes for africa...

Old and new, it was all good -

with this kind of scenery!

Some historic sights...

The highway consisted of about 50/50 gravel and sealed roads from the farm where we came out onto it....and along the way we pulled in for a rest here...
