This is Vermont .. we do things different ... don't ya think?

Barnard General Store Story - New Details.

Across the street from shimmering Silver Lake in the bucolic village of Barnard, the Barnard General Store should be busy in August selling ice cream, beer and sandwiches to the many kayakers and swimmers who enjoy the lake. But financial difficulties caused the store to close its doors in May after 180 years of continuous operation — an economic-downturn story that even captured the attention of the New York Times. This summer, there is no ice cream to be had at this Route 12 landmark in east-central Vermont.

There is, however, good news: The town of Barnard is not letting go of its store without a fight. Instead, a group of determined townspeople is trying to resuscitate it.

Three days before the store closed last spring, local resident Hope Moffat used the town listserv to call a meeting in the basement ...

Big fish, little lake...

Yeah, so this weekend we're doing a little to raise some money for the store, and maybe get another article or two...

Building a big fish, with horseshoes for scales (still not *that* kind of blacksmith, but what the hey), riding down the hill toward the lake on a sled...

Community kids will paint wooden fins, gills, and the fish itself.

Yep, we do things a little differently here.

Forget all that noise, I'm NBC'ed out, are you going to have the proper rations in the coolers this September?

rations

Dunno, but it looks good. Wouldn't hurt to give Ida's a call to stock up on the good beer though. I'll see what I can do as far as arranging for cases to be delivered to the park.

The Bernard country store sure made Cromag for me last. year!!! Great service, selection, and food!! I"d be happy to spend my food and beer money there, regardless of cost if it helped a landmark make it thru hard times. It's places like that, that make New England what it is! Would it help to have more volunteers for the cromag weekend? I'd trade some riding time to help out, maybe others here would as well.

Laugh Open the store!

The Barnard General Store is awesome. It must re-open! That place is great.

I'll ask about Volunteers

I'll ask when I go inside for another cuppa joe...

As of now, they have coffee, locally made and purchased baked goods, hardboiled eggs, etc. That way they can have a 'bake sale' and get donations.

Getting close to opening though.

7-10 a.m. is limiting, but consistent!

Volun-tears

Won't really know anything until closer to the time, but they're far off from the goal (good so far though), and I hear tell it'll be a store (licenses, etc. ) soon.

But they'll be there for morning coffee either way.

And most will give you the finger, but only if you don't drop a few dollars in the basket!

Instead of the basket point your browser to Friends of the Barnard General Store
