If you don't space the sprockets out you run the risk of hitting the tire with the chain in left handers.
As the tire experiences side force, it will pull the tread toward the chain and possibly rub.
Keep a very close eye on it.

What about bumping down one size? Yokohama makes that nice tire, the S Drive, in 195/45-17. Would that fit the rim?

Kiliing time waiting for other family members to leave for the airport, so spent some more time looking at this. The section width of the O.P.'s Matrix Tour is 8.4 inches. Are there any 205/50-17's that are narrower? Yes! Info from the Tire Rack website--

8.2 inches -- Sumitomo HTR


8.2 inches -- Dunlop SP Sport 7000


8.1 inches -- Pirelli Winter Snowsport


8.0 inches -- General Altimax Arctic

I found a Pirelli P6 Four Seasons Plus at Discount Tire with a Section Width of 8.01. That should work, no?

No. The dimensions I posted are all based on the tire being mounted to a 6.5" rim. The Pirelli P6 Four Seasons Plus on a 6.5" rim has a section width of 8.4" which is the same as most of the tires in this size category.

The spacer suggestion posted above is probably the way to go if it doesn't muck anything up.

Whilst I cannot comment on the Suzuki, tyre type, make, or availability, just a thought.

When we acquired our current outfit, the BMW K and Saluki, the rear tyre, mounted on a 15" car wheel, was a 185. Some experimenting with ratios, including bevel drive changes, saw the fitting of a 175, then a 165. Other than slight gear ratio changes that performed as required (well, one didn't, left me with a hardly worn tyre, so don't tell the missus), there was no appreciable disadvantage having the narrower tyres.

More interesting is that the acquisition of narrower Wasp wheels now sees a 145 width tyre on the rear. So far performance remains as required. Maybe, just maybe, the big wide tyres are more about look than anything else.

Hi there. Sorry for not posting an update sooner. I have over 6000 miles on the Suzuki 1250 Bandit with the car tire on back. I'm running a Hannigan Supersport sidecar. I have had no problems with the tire. I have not spaced out the sprockets. All I did to the chain guard, was grind a little of it off were it was close to the tire. I have 3/8 inch clearance from the tire to the chain guard. It's never rubbed. I like to ride hard in the turns, and nothing has rubbed. I'm getting a good even wear on the tire. If I had to do it over, I would have gone with the 195 instead of the 205. My local tire dealer thought that the smallest width he could get was the 205. The biggest problem I had with this width of tire, was clearance of the brake caliper on installation. I had to take the caliper off to get the tire in. Then install the caliper. Just a little extra work. The 205/50-17 is larger in diameter than the stock motorcycle tire. I installed a two tooth smaller sprocket in front. If I had gone with the 195/40-17, I probably could have kept the stock gearing. Overall, I'm very happy with this set up. Blaine

Like Nortwestrider I installed a 205/50-17 on my Strom outfit and it has been brilliant.

nary a problem to be had and the mileage is incredible.

Has anyone had problems with a car tyre on a big Suzuki ? A friend has a 175 width on his 1400 and it has twice partially left the rim, thankfully not disasterously. Could it be a tyre rim design issue, or some other factor ?
Ideas anyone ?
