I am officially way behind on my postings..... These pics were taken about a month ago, or late March. I'll see if I can remember anything interesting that happened along the way. I started out my ride with Humpback road, a fun detour that bypasses Langford. Ya better honk, the sign says so!

The same creek I visited the week before, though with the snow melt, i looks a bit wilder! I don't think I will attempt this one this time....

I went to check Jordan River Main, to see how the Reservoir access was, and there was still too much snow! It's been a heck of a year for snow on the Island!

Before I headed home, I did a quick hike down to I think it was French Beach, to watch the sunset. I can feel spring on its way!

The following week......500 meters.

Just can't get anywhere these days!

Well, every week it's a little less. I headed to some lower elevations to explore.

Some lines, you should just walk first!

Found this nice little pond after some real nice flowy single track!

Here's on the way out.

All the trees here were marked with different numbers for some reason.

More awesome new singletrack in a different spot!

One of the first nice days this year! Spring is coming!

Excellent Thread!
Wow a wolf in the south island, you are lucky.
I am limiting my self to gravel roads cause I have a 1200 gsa, but that whole area between shawnigan and jordan river is great riding, still looks like a bit of snow up there though.

This is great, totally love the little trip installments and cool pictures!

Enjoyed several years (local lower mainland) on my DR350 but alas, never made it to the Island on it.

Okay, I'm not going to edit the last post! It's way too confusing trying to put them together in chronological order! it was too long ago. Sorry, life is just too busy! It's all the same general area around Shawnigan. Here are a few more from the same ride.

Workin on the Machine

Been doing next to no riding, though I did head up to bear creek reservoir a few weeks back. ( maybe I'll call it BCR from now on).

I've had my charging problem come back again, the coils seem to be grounding again....WTF? The stator is less than 6 months old! Anyway, I disconnected the low-beam, and it seems to charge fine like that.....Weird, eh? Maybe the P/O wired the headlights wrong or something....

Now.... I have spent the last few weeks replacing Swingarm, Linkage, and wheel bearings....As well, I just put in new sliders, which were badly needed. Unfortunately, it was too late for the front of the swingarm, and the chain ate a hole in the bearing seal surface.....I'm happy to ignore it for now, at least the hole isn't behind the seal. One day I'd like to have it welded at work, and then bore the seal surface to shape again. (JB weld might be easier to coordinate! I only have one machine, and it's a big job).

I made up a puller for the Swingarm bolt, as it was uber stuck. Props to the TT member that posted the how-to!
I ended up using 3/8" readi-rod and filing the threads down a bit on the end to make it fit through, and ground off the corners of the jam nuts for clearance as well.

It didn't come easy, but It did eventually crack! Man that was a lot of work. Keep up on that stuff, it's a lot easier. I don't think the p/o did a thing to this bike! I should have done this a year ago, but it was my first bike, and I just wanted to ride it!

Here's what I found. Now, THAT is a lot more than one years worth of rat shit!

Swingarm damage.

You get the Idea.....It feels like a new bike after replacing these! I didn't realize how much rear suspension I was missing!

Dayliner Woes

This has been a real thorn in the side of Islanders for a long, long time. It is a valuable corridor, and is another example of a resource that has been allowed to rot away, while government sits idle.

It is still used for the odd load of freight, but the shape of the line is deplorable. Sadly, the Dayliner passenger train is not currently running because of this. There is talk of getting it going again, but the track needs to be refurbished, and the business plan of the Dayliner needs to be re-structured into a useable commuter service in order to make money.

A good start for this would be a service between downtown Victoria, and Colwood / Langford to ease the dreaded "Colwood Crawl". People are screaming for it.

Zombie Survival / Retirement Plan

Somewhere, some day, I'd like to build myself a little log cabin in the woods. Every kids dream! There are the odd few cabins in the woods around here if you know where to look. Some of them are liveable, others, not so much.

IMG_0893

I'll have to find somewhere else to spend the night.

IMG_0898

Stove, long since removed. I wonder what the story behind this place is? Did someone live here, was it a summer home, Loggers maybe?

IMG_0900

I wonder if there was a mill at the BCR at some point? What were these old boilers used for?

IMG_0881

I don't recall seeing an engine anywhere, so I want to go back for a closer look. I recently saw a great video of a guy who pulled an old boiler out of the bush along with a steam engine, and eventually got them running!

Me thinks a water wheel might be easier.....

And yes, there are fish!

IMG_0884

I know where I'm going on 12/21/12!
