Worse yet, Checa did a 1:31.63 (on the old 1198) and Sykes did a 1:31.3 at the earlier WSBK race!?!

you can't compare different weekends.

In the old days, the fast 250 guys used to lap as fast as the slower 500 guys. Not much hard acceleration at PI, which is where the MotoGP bikes really gain.

I agree that weather will skew the times, but it is interesting to think of WSBK guys going just as fast as MotoGP given the drastically different dollar value of the bikes!

Misano, a track with a lot more acceleration spots (actually one of toughest for MotoGP because of fuel usage):

WSBK
Lap record, Checa, 2012: 1'36.080

MotoGP
Lap record, Lorenzo, 2011: 1'33.906

PI is a weird track. Last year, one of the Australian SBK machines lapped as fast as the slowest MotoGP machine.

Based on Vale's interview on page 344, it looks like he is racing for all the right reasons. He still loves to race.

Hopefully he'll still be able to fight for the top spots.

I would love to see Rossi rise to the top, one more time.

Also it is worth to check average speed over race distance or total race time if same number of laps are raced. SBK might put down a quick one on the qualifiers but lack the race pace MotoGP has. This year at the Island fastest SBK race pace was Biaggi's 171,4kph at race1. Stoner did 175,7kph average speed. Biaggi would have finished MotoGP race at P12 right behind Aspar ART-bikes who did 171,5kph over race distance. That's over a minute behind Stoner.

Bit deceiving, that. Biaggi isn't near as fast as the aliens. To compare them on different spec machines is kinda apples/oranges. Hell, even the aliens weren't keeping up to Stoner this weekend.

Then throw in the different spec tire. It's my impression that the pirellis are much better than the bridgestones when it comes to fast laps, the bridgestone being built more to 'last'.

I understand your point and agree with it. My only point was just show that comparing only individual fastest laps are not the whole truth. When there is different rules, tires etc. obviously straight forward comparison is impossible but still quite interesting to see where they line up against the other class.

Closest comparo would be last year, when Rossi was coming back from injury. He did laps on an sbk machine the monday after the brno race (IIRC). He was quicker than the race winner (Biaggi), on a bike that had finished 6th. Not 100% on the exact numbers, someone will be along shortly to correct me if I got it wrong, I'm sure.
